Advanced Placement (AP)

Pride, Determination, Perseverance


The Advanced Placement (AP) Program is a cooperative educational endeavor with the College Board. It is based on the premise that many high school students are capable of completing college-level courses. The AP Program represents a desire of schools and colleges to foster such experiences. Advanced Placement serves three groups: (a) students who wish to pursue college-level studies, (b) schools that desire to offer these opportunities, and (c) colleges that wish to encourage and recognize such achievement. Participating colleges grant credit and/or appropriate placement to students who have done well on the examinations. The only requirements are a strong curiosity about the subject you plan to study and the willingness to work hard. Students that have completed AP courses have gained the following benefits:

Students that have elected to enroll in Pre-AP courses are encouraged to meet the academic challenge of AP course work. AP courses require extra reading and analysis time on the part of the student. Standardized examinations are given during May of each year, with scores of 1-5 being reported to colleges of choice. During the enrollment process, please visit with your counselor regarding AP courses you may wish to take. By taking three or more AP courses during your high school career, students can qualify for national recognition:

Advanced Placement Scholar: Students receiving scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP exams.

AP Scholars with Honors: Students receiving an average score of 3.25 on all AP exams, and scores of 3 or

higher on four or more AP exams.

Scholars with Distinction: Students receiving scores of 3 or higher on five or more exams.

National Merit Scholars: Students receiving an average score of 4 or higher on eight or more AP exams.

AP COURSES OFFERED AT EVANS HIGH SCHOOL

AP Art Draw/ 2D Design/ 3D Design Portfolio: Designed for students who are seriously interested in the practical experience of art. AP Studio Art is not based on a written examination; instead, students submit portfolios for evaluation at the end of the school year. This can apply to drawing, photography, and sculpture.

AP Biology: Includes a detailed study of molecules and cells, genetics and evolution, and organisms and populations. Taking Biology Honors is recommended. 

AP Calculus AB: Most of the year must be devoted to topics in differential and integral calculus. Students must be familiar with the properties of functions, the algebra of functions, and the graphs of functions. Students must also understand the language of functions.

AP Chemistry: This math intensive, college level chemistry course is designed to develop a greater depth of understanding of fundamentals and a reasonable competence in dealing with chemical problems. The course will contribute to the development of the student’s abilities to think clearly and to express their ideas, orally and in writing, with clarity and logic. Taking Chemistry Honors prior to AP Chemistry is required

AP English Language: This composition course emphasizes the expository, analytical, and argumentative writing that forms the basis of academic and professional communication, as well as the personal and reflective writing that fosters the ability to write in any context.

AP English Literature: Designed to engage students in the careful reading and critical analysis of imaginative literature. Students should consider a work's structure, style, and themes, as well as such smaller-scale elements as the use of figurative language, imagery, symbolism, and tone.

AP Environmental Science: Covers earth science, chemistry, biology, and math while increasing problem solving skills. The goal of APES is to help students cultivate their understanding of the interrelationships of the natural world through inquiry-based lab investigations as they explore the concepts of energy transfer, interactions between earth systems, interactions between different species and the environment, and sustainability. Students will analyze natural and human-made environmental problems, evaluate the relative risks associated with these problems, and examine alternative solutions for resolving or preventing them

AP French Language & Culture: Students cultivate their understanding of French language and culture by applying interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational modes of communication in real-life situations as they explore concepts related to family and community, personal and public identity, beauty and aesthetics, science and technology, contemporary life, and global challenges

AP Human Geography: Economic theories and models, international conflicts, border disputes, world religions, the origin of languages, urban development, industrialization and city planning are among issues explored in this course.

AP Macroeconomics: includes a thorough understanding of the principles of economics that apply to an economic system as a whole. It emphasizes the study of national income and price determination, the financial sector, and inflation, unemployment, and stabilization policies. It develops familiarity with economic performance measures, productivity, economic growth, and national economics.

AP Pre-Calculus: Prepares students for other higher-level mathematics and science courses. The framework delineates content and skills common to college precalculus courses that are foundational for careers in mathematics, physics, biology, health science, social science, and data science.

AP Spanish Language: Students cultivate their understanding of Spanish language and culture by applying interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational modes of communication in real-life situations as they explore concepts related to family and communities, personal and public identities, beauty and aesthetics, science and technology, contemporary life, and global challenges.

AP United States Government and Politics:
 Involves both the study of general concepts used to interpret U.S. politics and the analysis of specific case studies. It also requires familiarity with the various institutions, groups, beliefs, and ideas that constitute U.S. political reality.

AP United States History: Students learn to assess historical materials, their relevance to a given interpretive problem, their reliability, and their importance, and to weigh the evidence and interpretations presented in historical scholarship.

AP World History: The course highlights the nature of changes in international frameworks and their causes and consequences, as well as comparisons among major societies.
