Ms. Kenya Nelson-Warren

Principal 

Ms. Kenya Nelson-Warren, Principal

Kenya Nelson-Warren is the proud Principal and graduate of Evans High School.  She attended Florida State University, earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Central Florida, and 2 master’s degrees from Troy University in public personnel management and educational leadership.  She has a total of 27 years of educational experience with Orange County Public Schools. Ms. Nelson-Warren is an experienced High School Assistant Principal of 12 years with OCPS, and has served at the following high schools: Dr. Phillips High School (3 months), Evans High School (19 years), Apopka High School (4 years), and Olympia High School (1 year).  She has also served as a trainer for the Alternative Certification Program (ACP) for new teachers that were non-education majors in OCPS, and she facilitated Great Beginnings sessions for teachers starting their educational career with OCPS as well.

Ms. Nelson-Warren is excited about the opportunity of returning to her alma mater to support the students, faculty and staff, and community of Evans High School.  When she is not working, Ms. Nelson-Warren enjoys gardening, cooking, baking, traveling, and spending time with family.

Dr. LaTonya Brown, Assistant Principal


Dr. LaTonya Brown is the Assistant Principal for Social Studies.  Dr. Brown has served as an educator for over twenty-eight years in the capacity of teacher, dean, assistant principal, senior administrator and principal. She has also served as an adjunct instructor at Southern College, DeVry University and Valencia Community College.


Dr. Brown was born in Orlando, FL and was raised in West Palm Beach, FL. Her career began as an elementary teacher in Palm Beach County, Florida. She later moved to Orlando and taught at the elementary and middle school levels, then began her administrative career in middle school.  She was honored to serve students at Pine Hills Elementary, Gotha Middle School, Eagles Nest Elementary, Palm Lake Elementary and Hunters Creek Middle School as a teacher, dean and assistant principal.  Dr. Brown also supported several schools as a district senior administrator. As principal, Dr. Brown served students at Cypress Park, Lake Gem and East Lake elementary schools. 


Dr. Brown is a proud graduate of Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University; she earned both her B.S. and M.S. degrees in Elementary Education. She also earned an Ed.S. in Educational Leadership and an Ed.D. in Organizational Leadership both from Nova Southeastern University.


Dr. Brown feels a sense of connection to Evans High School because her grandfather taught Diversified Career Technology (DCT) at Evans and her uncle and sister are both graduates of Evans High School. In her spare time, Dr. Brown enjoys time with her sons and family, going to the movies, listening to music, dancing and relaxing at the beach.

Ms. Karen Diaz

Ms. Karen Diaz,  Assistant Principal

Karen Diaz is the Assistant Principal for English and Reading at Evans High School. Ms. Diaz has been a proud educator for twelve years, working at both the elementary and middle school levels. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice and a Master of Science in Educational Leadership.

Ms. Diaz was born in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, and raised in Brooklyn, New York. She relocated to Orlando, Florida, in 2006, where she joined OCPS as a Registrar and then Bookkeeper. After earning her bachelor’s degree, Ms. Diaz worked as an Intervention Teacher. She has since served as a classroom teacher, MTSS Coach, ESOL Compliance Specialist, Reading Coach, Testing Coordinator, and Instructional Coach. In those positions, she provided ongoing support to teachers and students by implementing strategies for improving achievement. 

When Ms. Diaz is not at work, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends. She is the proud mother of two sons and two daughters. She enjoys listening to music and traveling with her family and friends.

Dr. Wendy Duroseau, Assistant Principal

Dr. Wendy Duroseau is the Assistant Principal for Science. Dr. Duroseau has served as an educator for almost 20 years in the capacity of elementary and middle grades teacher, CRT, testing coordinator, ESOL Compliance Specialist, and Literacy Coach. She has also served as an adjunct instructor at Valencia Community College and the University of Central Florida.

Dr. Duroseau is a Tennessee native, born and raised in Chattanooga.  She began her career as an elementary ESOL teacher in Seminole County, Florida. Since then, she has continued her professional growth  at Meadowbrook Middle school and Oak Ridge High School, where she served as an Assistant Principal.


Dr. Duroseau is a proud graduate of Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University.  She earned a B.S. degree in Elementary Education. She then went on to Harvard Graduate School of Education to earn her Masters in Education for Reading and Literacy with a Literacy Specialist License.  Dr. Duroseau earned an EdS in Educational Leadership and an Ed.D. in Organizational Leadership, both from National Louis University. 


When not working, Dr. Duroseau enjoys spending time with her husband and children, shopping, traveling, and being a foodie.

Dr.  Priscilla Reyes, Senior Administrator


Priscilla Reyes is the Senior Administrator for the Evans Community School. Dr. Reyes is originally from the Bronx, NY. Her family moved to Orlando, FL during high school, where she attended and graduated from Oak Ridge High School. For college, Dr. Reyes relocated back to New York, where she obtained her undergraduate degree in Business Administration and an M.B.A. While starting her teaching career,  she decided to study educational leadership and received her Ed.D. from National Louis University.

 

Dr. Reyes began her career as an educator at Apopka High School in Career and Technical Education (CTE), teaching AP Computer science and Digital Information Technology. Dr. Reyes taught at Apopka High School for five years, where she managed to create new extracurricular activities like the Darter Coding club, Girls Who Code, and the Apk ESports club. She then went into the post-secondary sector and held the position of an adjunct at Orange Technical College over the two programs of Modeling Simulation Design and Production.  

 

Dr. Reyes is delighted to serve the Evans community and feels a sense of connection because her mother was once the internal accounts bookkeeper, and her sister and brother graduated from Evans High School. In her spare time, Dr. Reyes loves to spend time with her family and teach computer science to  young kids in low socio-economic areas .

Ms. Ericka Scheid,  Assistant Principal


Ericka Scheid is the Assistant Principal of Instruction at Evans High School. While she was born and raised in Ohio, Ms. Scheid earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a Master of Arts in Educational Media and Technology from Eastern Michigan University. She received her Master of Education in Educational Leadership from Grand Canyon University. She is currently working on her PhD in Special Education at University of Northern Colorado’s Extended Campus. Ms. Scheid has supported students in public schools for 23 years, with the last 18 years in OCPS. She has worked as a Systems Operator, Media Clerk, Media Specialist, Behavior Specialist, Staffing Specialist, and Behavior Analyst across all grade levels. Prior to entering education, Ms. Scheid worked in residential facilities for individuals with disabilities. 

 

When she is not at work, Ms. Scheid enjoys spending time with her family and friends, traveling, and running half marathons (her goal is to run a half marathon in every state). She is the proud mother to a son and daughter, who are OCPS graduates. Ms. Scheid is passionate about ensuring all students have the appropriate educational services to lead them to a successful future.

Mr. Clarence Truitt,  Assistant Principal

Clarence Truitt is the Assistant Principal for Mathematics. Mr. Truitt has been a successful educator at both the high school and alternative school levels for over twenty-five years. He graduated from Florida Memorial University with a bachelor’s of science degree in Mathematics, Florida State University with a master’s of science degree in mathematics education and Stetson University with a specialist degree in curriculum and instruction. 

After beginning his teaching career in the Miami-Dade County Public School system for 12 years, Mr. Truitt moved to Central Florida and had the pleasure of working at Evans High School for 8 years. After a brief hiatus at Leesburg and Ocoee High Schools as an assistant principal, Mr. Truitt comes back home to Evans High School. He believes that having a partnership and open communication with all stakeholders makes for a successful culture of learning. Mr. Truitt loves to spend quality time with his family and friends when he is not at Evans.

Ms. Danielle Allen, Mathematics Instructional Coach


Danielle Allen is the Mathematics Instructional Coach at Evans High School. She was born in Washington D.C. but grew up on an Army post in Fort Meade, Maryland. 


After high school she continued her education at the University of Maryland where she earned a bachelor’s degree in secondary education and mathematics. She then moved to Florida to begin her teaching career and to attend the University of Central Florida where she earned a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction. 


Prior to becoming the math coach she taught various high school math courses ranging from Algebra 1 to AP Calculus. When she is not at Evans you will find Ms. Allen at the gym or spending time with her dog and rabbit.

Ms. Tamara Birdsong,  Literacy Lead/English Language Arts Coach

Tamara Birdsong is the Literacy Lead/English Language Arts Coach. She studied Mass Communications: Public Relations at Morris Brown College in Atlanta, Georgia. Additionally, she attended Strayer University and received a bachelor’s in Business Administration with a concentration in Human Resources Management.  She is currently pursuing her master’s in Educational Leadership at Arizona State University.

Prior to embarking upon her career in education, Ms. Birdsong worked in the training department for a telecommunications company for 13 years.  Her journey into education began in 2010 here at Evans, where she   has contributed professionally as a tutor, program assistant, and Reading Instructor. She is also a proud Evans Trojan alumna and a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

Ms. Birdsong has a zeal for empowering students with the confidence to succeed and believes that all students deserve a rewarding learning environment that is conducive to personal and academic growth. 

When she is not working, Ms. Birdsong enjoys making memories with her family and friends, traveling, trying new eateries and relaxing  at the beach.

Ms. Ashley Harris, Science Instructional Coach


Ashley Harris is the Science Instructional Coach at Evans High School. She was raised in Orlando, FL. After high school, she continued her education at Stillman College where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Biology. She then received her master's in education from Kaplan University.  


Ms. Harris is a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She has worked for Orange County Public Schools since 2013. Prior to becoming a science coach, Ms. Harris taught Biology I, Honors Biology and AP Biology. She prides herself in meeting the needs of diverse learners and cultivating positive work relationships. When she is not at Evans, you will find Ms. Harris spending time with her son Xavier, traveling, and enjoying outdoor activities.

Ms. Stephanie Small, Social Science Instructional Coach and Cambridge Program Coordinator

 

Stephanie Small is the Social Science Instructional Coach and Cambridge Program Coordinator. She is originally from New Brunswick, Canada, but also grew up in Newmarket, New Hampshire. She moved to Florida to attend college at the University of Central Florida. She graduated with her bachelor’s degree in Social Science Education in 2017.

 

Prior to becoming an Instructional Coach, Ms. Small taught U.S. History, Honors U.S. History and Advanced Placement U.S. History at Evans High School for 6 years. She prides herself in building positive student relationships as well as providing a rigorous education through the skills taught in the  social sciences

 

In her spare time, Ms. Small enjoys spending time with her husband and two dogs as well as traveling and exploring new historical places, visiting the local theme parks, going to the beach, and watching movies.

Ms. Barbara Verity, Curriculum Resource Teacher/Assistant Athletic Director for Academics

Barbara Verity is the Curriculum Resource Teacher,  who aids other teachers in the use of instructional strategies, and the Assistant Athletic Director for Academics. Ms. Verity spent 12 years teaching various high school social science courses including MYP Humanities and AP Government as well as AVID, in addition to completing four years as the AVID District Coordinator, and the past two years as an Instructional Coach here at Evans. She also does consultant work and training for AVID. 

She currently holds a bachelor’s degree in secondary social science education and a master's degree in educational leadership. With her spare time, she loves traveling, seeing movies, and spending quality family time with her two daughters.

Retiya Woods serves as the Literacy Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) Coach for Evans High School. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Florida Gulf Coast University. She then began her teaching career and quickly developed a passion for literacy education, which inspired her to obtain her master’s degree in Curriculum & Instruction with a concentration in Reading. 

She is a proud member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. When she is not working, Ms. Woods enjoys spending time with her family, reading, and playing basketball. She is eager to serve Evans and the community.

Ms. Nzinga Green, Administrative Dean

Nzinga Green serves as one of the Administrative Deans at Evans High School.  Ms. Green attended West Orange High School and Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU), where she received her Civil Engineering degree. She has completed master's level coursework in Educational Leadership.

She worked in industry for many years including NASA; working with young people in the education arena, however, is where she has found her passion.  Ms. Green has been with Orange County Public Schools for over 10 years.  She has had the opportunity to work in the Safety Department, teach Engineering 1 & 2, Algebra 1, and Geometry. Outside of the classroom, Ms. Green has coached girls weightlifting and sponsored several clubs. 

In her spare time, she enjoys church, CrossFit, photography, and hanging out on the couch with her family laughing!

Ms. Allyson Lewis, Attendance Dean

Allyson Lewis is the Attendance Dean at Evans High School. She was born and raised in Lakeland, Polk County, Florida. After high school, she continued her education at Howard University and Virginia State University where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Theatre Arts. After earning her undergraduate degree, Ms. Lewis attended law school. She was hired at Evans High School as a Social Science instructor and has since earned a master's in Educational Leadership from Grand Canyon University.

Prior to getting into education, Ms. Lewis worked in the legal field and owned a Subway franchise.  As an educational engineer, Mrs. Lewis believes it is her duty to meet each student where they are and grow them. This is not only a career for her, but a lifelong service to our future leaders in America.  When she is not at Evans you will find Ms. Lewis spending time with her spouse, traveling, and on the golf course.

Mr. Eric Saxon, Administrative Dean/Athletics Business Manager

Eric R. Saxon, an Orlando native and graduate of Orange County Public Schools, serves as one of the Administrative Deans and Athletics Business Manager. He holds bachelor’s degrees in English education and Spanish language and culture education from the University of Central Florida and has completed master's level coursework in Educational Leadership.

He joined OCPS in January 2004. Since then, he has taught varying levels of English ranging from remedial through Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate, Spanish, AVID, SAT/ACT Preparation, adult English classes, student success courses, and served as an administrative dean and instructional coach. Additionally, he has held positions as a professional development consultant and instructional coach with The College Board, an adjunct professor at Valencia College, and public information officer for the City of Orlando.

Mr. Saxon is always conscious that in one way or another, educators are the source of all other jobs and careers. When not at Evans, he is likely planespotting, viewing a documentary or historical drama, and/or watching FSU football (Go Noles!).

Mr. Demond Walker, Administrative Dean 

Demond Walker  serves as one of the Administrative Deans at Evans High School. Mr. Walker was born and raised in West Palm Beach, FL. He graduated from Palm Beach Lakes Community High School. He attended Bethune-Cookman College (now Bethune-Cookman University) earning a bachelor’s in varying exceptionalities and specific learning disabilities. Years later, he attended Nova Southeastern University earning a master’s in educational leadership.

He has had varied professional education experiences. Walker worked as a teacher for 6 years, teaching VE classes at the elementary level. He has served in a variety of administrative capacities for several years. He also has several years of experience teaching Adult ESOL classes in West Palm Beach, Orlando Technical College, and Seminole State College. Mr. Walker’s entire professional career has been dedicated to ensuring academic success and social development of children within the K-12 school system. He thoroughly enjoys contributing to the overall success of all children.

Mr. Mikel Whiting, Administrative Dean 

Mikel Whiting is one of the Administrative Deans at Evans High School. Mr. Whiting was born and raised in Tallahassee, FL.  He is a graduate of Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University (FAMU) High School, earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business and Economics from FAMU, and received his Master of Education degree from National Louis University. 


He has been a member of the education profession since 2002 and served as a Teacher, Resource Teacher, Administrative Dean, and Assistant Principal.  He currently oversees transportation services and serves as an Administrative Dean at Evans High School.  He has received numerous awards throughout his career including being recognized for “Outstanding Attendance” by Community Education Partners (CEP), “Outstanding Community Service and Involvement” and “Contact of the Year” by Community Blood Centers of Florida, and “Support Person of the Month” by Evans High School. 


He and his darling wife, Tasha, have five children, which includes one son, four daughters, and one grandson.

Mr. Gregory Thompson, Athletic Director

Gregory Thompson is a lifelong resident of Apopka, Florida. Mr. Thompson graduated from Apopka High School and attended Florida State University on an athletic scholarship for football and Track in 1979. Mr. Thompson graduated from FSU with a bachelor’s in criminology and a certification in corrections. Mr. Thompson returned to his alma mater and began a career in education as an assistant football and track & field coach in 1986. Mr. Thompson has been at Evans High School for more than  25 years, where he has served in various roles, including classroom instructor, administrative dean, and athletic coach. 

Mr. Thompson, often called “Coach,” led the boys track team to back to back team state championships in 2005 and 2006. Coach Thompson also led the girls track program to 4 consecutive regional championships. He was  named Florida Dairy Farmer's, Orlando Sentinel, and Metro Conference Coach of the Year in the years 2005 and 2006. Coach Thompson holds the distinction of being the only Evans HS coach to  ever win back-to-back state championships.

When not at Evans High School, Mr. Thompson enjoys traveling the Caribbean with his wife and playing golf.

Ms. Donna Benefiel, College and Career Resource Specialist

Donna Benefiel is the College and Career Resource Specialist.  The College and Career Resource Center assists students with applying for admission and scholarships for post-secondary education.  Ms. Benefiel is originally from Memphis, Tennessee, but has called Florida home for the past 12 years. 

Ms. Benefiel attended the University of Memphis and Florida Atlantic University and has her Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Social Studies Education and has taught World History, AP Human Geography, AP World History, and AVID. She has also served as a Dean and a Curriculum Resource Teacher. She brings all of these experiences along with her own experiences of assisting her children in applying for college and financial aid to the College and Career Resource Center.

Mr. David Berardi

Mr. David Berardi, Media Specialist

David Berardi is a Boston transplant who attended the University of Central Florida for his undergrad career. He double majored in biomedical and forensic sciences with a concentration in biochemistry. He then returned to UCF for graduate school as a participant in the Resident Teacher Professional Preparation Program (RTP3) while starting his educational career at Evans High School as an instructor of Chemistry. Mr. Berardi soon added Biology and Anatomy and Physiology to his teaching repertoire within his four years of teaching. 

In his fifth faithful year at Evans, Berardi became the Testing Coordinator and remained in that role for two and a half years. Mr. Berardi now serves as the Media Specialist, beginning his tenth year as a Trojan. He is an avid photographer with a passion for travel and art.

Jennifer Bohn serves as the Student Assistance and Family Empowerment (SAFE) Coordinator. Ms. Bohn is a student advocate and is passionate about serving and supporting at Evans High School. She is also the proud sponsor of the National Beta Club.

Ms. Bohn graduated from the University of Central Florida with a bachelor’s degree in social science education and earned a master’s degree from Nova Southeastern University. She enjoys spending time with her husband and beautiful daughter Mackenzie.

ESOL Compliance Specialist 

Mr. Philippe Castel, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Compliance Specialist 

Philippe Castel is the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Compliance Specialist. He provides instructional support to teachers to ensure that English Language Learners (or ELLs) receive appropriate accommodations in order to be successful academically.

Mr. Castel comes from Paris, France where he graduated from the University of Paris with a master’s degree in English linguistics and educational psychology. He speaks French, Haitian Creole, Spanish, and English. Mr. Castel has been working at Evans HS since 1996. He first started as an ESOL Teacher and was teaching reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills to newcomers. Even though it was difficult to leave the classroom and his students, he became a compliance teacher in 2004.

He is now responsible for all the multilingual students and loves to learn about the diverse population and the different cultures represented on campus. He was the girls wrestling coach for two years and he is currently the proud sponsor of the Multicultural Club of Evans HS. He is also a 3rd degree black belt in Judo and loves martial arts.

Mr. John Harrell, International Baccalaureate Coordinator


John Harrell is the Coordinator of Evans’ International Baccalaureate (IB) program. He is graduate of the University of Florida. He joined the faculty at Evans in 2002, teaching in the social sciences department before taking a position as an OCPS resource teacher. In this role, Mr. Harrell oversaw a $1 million awarded to OCPS by the federal government. He was a primary author of the state standards for World History, as well as the exams for social science teacher certification and the state US History exam. While he enjoyed his time there, he realized that Evans is where he wanted to be and doesn’t plan on leaving unless it’s on a stretcher. 


One of his educational passions is working with students to help them through the college preparation and application process. This is his sixth year serving as IB coordinator, after several years teaching IB Theory of Knowledge. Besides cheering on the Gators, Mr. Harrell can be found working on his classic British convertible on weekends. He and his wife, a longtime Evans counselor now at OCPS Technical College, have two children who are both OCPS students.

Ms. Bonnie Norman, Staffing Specialist


Bonnie Norman serves as the Staffing Specialist for Evans High School. She earned her bachelor’s from the University of South Florida, and master’s degree from Saint Leo University. She has almost 2 decades of educational experience in Orange and Pasco County Schools. 

Ms. Norman is a highly effective and seasoned Special Education Teacher leading both her Professional Learning Community and ESE Departments at previous schools. Additionally, she has served in various other roles including the athletics Business Manager, women’s volleyball and basketball coach, Special Olympics Program School Based Coordinator and Coach, curriculum writer for the Pasco Access Program and collaboratively writing new standards for all Access Programs for the State of Florida.

Laura Schomberg is the Testing and Advanced Placement (AP) Coordinator at Evans High School.  Ms. Schomberg attended the University of Alabama before transferring to the University of Central Florida.  She has earned a bachelor's degree in Accounting.  She worked in the accounting field before going back to the University of Central Florida to earn a bachelor's and then a Master's in Communication Disorders. 

She started in OCPS as a Speech/Language Clinician at Hiawassee Elementary before eventually becoming a Staffing Specialist at Killarney Elementary School.  Ms. Schomberg transitioned from elementary to the Staffing Specialist at Freedom High School.  She then took on the roll of Testing Coordinator while still at Freedom High School.  When she is not at Evans, she enjoys reading, spending time with family and friends, and with her dog, Cinnamon.
