Your Community Brief from Evans High School
Monday, April 29, 2019

Thank you for your commitment to making Evans High School, "A Place of High Achievement." Our focus is on Literacy, Rigor, and Relationships and our school's pillars of Pride, Determination, and Perseverance continue to be on display by our students, staff and community.

Students, testing season is here and will be a part of what we do until the final day of school for the most part. As you mentally prepare yourself for the numerous assessments you will take, keep in mind that successful outcomes is all about generating and maintaining a sense of positive and psychological momentum. Here are a few helpful tips to help you maintain that momentum:

* Convince yourself that you are prepared and you will do your best on the day of the test. This breaks down a successful thought process into a much more manageable task.

* Do what works best for you! Do not change your routine or second guess yourself. Stick to what works for you and trust it to work. Remember that consistent preparation leads to consistent performance!

* There will be many stressful moments, but be sure to maintain your poise and composure. Trust yourself!

* Give yourself every reason to feel that you are destined for success. Know that you have paid the price for success through the training provided by your teachers. In addition, the instructional practices provided to you and the lessons you learned throughout this year have prepared you for this moment in time.

Lastly, be great; demonstrate Pride, Determination and Perseverance.

Remember, We Are Trojans!

In Trojan Pride,

Mr. Rolando Bailey
Principal

Pictured very top and just below: The picture at the top is a snapshot of our Decision Day signature poster. Important Testing Reminders
Trojans - as we move into testing season this week, please bring your laptops to school fully charged in preparation for testing. Outlets are not always going to be available for testing, and you don't want to postpone your testing day simply because your laptop is dead.

Ninth and 10th grade ELA students are testing Reading this upcoming Wednesday and Thursday. Please bring headphones, as part of the test requires them. We don't have enough to provide each student headphones, so they are loaned out on a first come, first serve basis.

Finally, good luck Trojans! Your teachers have you prepared and you have done the work. Remember to get your rest the night before a test and to eat a healthy breakfast the morning of the test. These simple actions will help give you an extra edge.

You MUST be present to take your designated AP Exam . . . if you are absent, you will be charged the price of the exam as an obligation.  We will be testing in the gym this year and you will receive a pass reminding you of the time and location of your exam.

You will receive more information regarding arrival and dismissal through email. You have to sit for the entire exam so plan to work for the entire time. Check with your teacher regarding individual exam length if you're not sure. Study hard!

You will do great!

Please see below the OCPS-produced video spotlighting this year's Valedictorian, Nabiha Nur. She's truly a great example of someone who is able to maintain balance through her life and schoolwork, and has always been a proud Trojan (which shows in the video!).

Evans' 1st LEDA Scholar, Evon ThompsonLEDAScholar

Congratulations to junior Evon Thompson who was one of 100 students selected from across the country as a LEDA Scholar. Evans High School has never had a student selected for this program in the past. He will spend seven weeks at Princeton University this summer! Read more about the incredible LEDA opportunity below:

Leadership Enterprise for a Diverse America - LEDA - was founded in 2003 by Gary Simons, founder of New York City's highly regarded Prep for Prep program. It is now the preeminent national nonprofit organization dedicated to diversifying the national leadership pipeline by helping high-achieving students from under-resourced backgrounds gain admission to our nation's most selective colleges and supporting their success at these institutions.

Each year, we recruit a new cohort of LEDA Scholars - 100 qualified high school juniors who show leadership potential but lack the exposure and support they need to attend highly selective colleges. LEDA Scholars receive leadership training, writing instruction, standardized test preparation and a year of highly personalized guidance as they navigate the application and admissions process at the most competitive colleges. Throughout college and beyond, Scholars are offered ongoing advising, career counseling, postgraduate planning and community-building support to help them succeed and lead.

LEDA has been recognized as an emerging leader not only in the national effort to improve college access for low-income students but in the real difference we make for students once they get there. In 2014, we participated in the first White House Summit on College Opportunity for Low-Income Students - a recognition of the impact our distinct approach has on the success of our Scholars in college and far beyond.

Mr. Janvier and Taina Samedi

Evans hosted the 2019 Spirit of Excellence Awards and were privileged to honor two of our very own Trojans this year. Mr. Janvier, an ELL paraprofessional, goes above and beyond to serve his students and is very deserving of this honor. Additionally, Taina Samedi (12th grade) proves that being bilingual is an advantage and is a model of pride, determination, and perseverance.

Congratulations to both of you!

If earning her PhD in Technology Integration and Quantum Computing isn't validation enough, Jamila Mitchell's work at the FBI, Google or Samsung definitely gives her credibility. The Evans High School computer science teacher has made it her mission to increase minorities in the CS field and is helping her students find their path.
