Your Community Brief from Evans High School
Thursday, April 11, 2019
|
Thank you for your commitment to making Evans High School, "A Place of High Achievement." Our focus is on Literacy, Rigor, and Relationships and our school's pillars of Pride, Determination, and Perseverance continue to be on display by our students, staff and community.
FSA Testing
Thank you to all of our students and families that were part of last week's FSA testing. The cooperation was greatly appreciated so that we were able to smoothly administer the writing assessments.
School Musical
Evans high school, proudly presents to our school community, Once On This Island. The spring musical will show on April 17th, 18th and 20th in our performing arts center. Start time for the show is 7:00 pm each evening.
Our theatre students led by Director, Ms. Montes, have been working hard over the last few weeks in preparation for the spring musical. It has also been a pleasure to see our students prepare for their musical; particularly the students who go unnoticed like stagecraft workers. Our students are phenomenal performers, talented singers, and gifted actors; but more than that, they are a great group of students, exceeding expectations inside the classroom!
Once On This Island is a performance the whole family will enjoy, so please make plans to join us for what I know will be a memorable evening!
Self-Advocate - A Life Skill
We must encourage our students to self-advocate. This is not a high school skill, but also a life skill. We can continue to fight the good fight for our kids, but at some point, our students must begin to advocate for themselves. To date, I have had hundreds of our students stop me in the hallways and talk through issues they are having in classes, with peers, with grades, and even issues they have with me or school policies (imagine that). I appreciate our students who stand up for what they believe or how they feel, articulate as best they can in a respectful way, and try to problem solve; not via social media but in person. Once again, this is a life skill and together we can support our Trojans development.
Thank you for your support and enjoy the rest of your week!
In Trojan Pride,
Mr. Rolando Bailey
Principal

Trojan Faculty Spotlight
Jennifer Bohn, our College and Career Counselor, has been a support to our students for over 20 years. She consistently provides students with opportunities to better themselves, their families, and their futures through job connections, sponsoring BETA club, and helping students gain millions of dollars each year in scholarships and more.
Ms. Bohn recently received an appreciation letter for her work in coordinating volunteers in the Legal Aid Society's Teen Parent Program. We are grateful for her impact on our students every day, but it's also great to know other people feel the same way!

HUB Happenings
Annual Trojan Day of Service
Our annual Trojan Service Day took place on March 30th, 2019 at Evans High School from 7:30 a.m to 12:00 p.m. Over 500 students and volunteers arrived to help with the beautification of
Evans campus, the Boys & Girls Club, Rolling Hills Elementary, as well as cleaning the streets of portions of
Districts 2 and 6.
The day began with volunteers checking in and helping themselves to breakfast sponsored by Starbucks. After breakfast, everyone was ushered into the gym for the opening ceremony. There,
Mr. Rolando Bailey (Evans High School Principal),
Mr. Michael Shaver (President & CEO, Children's Home Society of Florida),
Commissioner Christine Moore (District 2),
Commissioner Victoria P. Siplin (District 6), and
Mr. Craig Schneider (Director of Operations for Starbucks and Board Chair for City Year Orlando) gave inspirational and motivating messages to get the day started.
Along with the service opportunities, there were also learning opportunities that were beneficial not only to Evans students, but to all that participated. Orange County Fire & Rescue conducted a professional development session that gave students insight into their careers and a firsthand look at what it takes to be a fireman and paramedic. Additionally, Starbucks offered professional developments in personal branding and interviewing skills.
There were many highlights of the day, but the best one by far was seeing the
Orange County Sheriff's deputies working alongside the students during the street clean up. Later they came back and helped us serve pizza (sponsored by
Pizza Hut) to the kids! After lunch, the day ended with a PowerPoint presentation giving us a look back over the past four years of Trojan Service Day and a raffle giveaway where winners were awarded with gift cards and gift baskets.
