Your Community Brief from Evans High School

Tuesday, November 6, 2018

Thank you for your commitment to making Evans High School, "A Place of High Achievement." Our focus is on Literacy, Rigor, and Relationships and our school's pillars of Pride, Determination, and Perseverance continue to be on display by our students, staff and community.

Attendance

School attendance truly matters! Students suffer academically if they miss 10% of school days or about 18 days in a school year. That can be just one day every two weeks. Our school, supported by OCPS, places a very high importance on regular school attendance by students (see chart below). It's difficult for the teachers to build skills and progress if a large number of students are frequently absent or tardy. Teachers carefully plan sequences of instruction daily and when our students are absent, they fall behind. This is a root cause to academic performance records that are below satisfactory which can be resolved by simply being present at school and arriving to class on-time. Parents, your much needed assistance is being requested as together we can ensure academic success for our Trojans.

With Trojan Pride,

Principal Rolando Bailey

10th Grade English

Our English teachers had students in 10th grade working in groups with the FSA informational writing rubric to score exemplar texts. Students would review essays, reference the rubric to determine a score with reasoning, and then calibrate within their groups (using rubric language). The purpose of it was to familiarize students with the informational rubric, as well as the components that must be included in an "ideal" essay.

A Tribute to Coach Thompsontribute

So many times athletic coaches are remembered by some parents as the person who should have run this play or put in that player to execute the game winning play. From that, comes constant criticism that leads to a relationship that is tarnished by an evaluation of perceived coaching ability.

Some may remember the coach as the person who gave consequences for unsportsmanlike conduct or the person who has to bench the MVP to teach integrity - no matter how big the game may be.

However, the coaching profession embodies an emotional collage of excitement, challenges, surging highs, deep lows, physically and mentally demanding work, and the constant anticipation for what lies ahead. And, as we all know, there is the suffocating time commitment and strain on families and sacrifice of time with loved ones to serve, lead and support others.

For the countless number of collegiate scholarships, fatherly pep talks, and the endless amount of time and money you have unselfishly given to each student athlete, Coach Thompson, you will be always be a legendary mark on the shaping of character for our community.

Today we say thank you for your dedication, commitment ,and the support behind your two-time state champions in boys track.

Thank you Mr. Gregory Thompson.

Our Best Buddies program, sponsored by Ms. DuFour, had a great turnout last Thursday night as they celebrated their buddy pairings with food, family, and great conversation!

Theatretheatre
Evans' first production of 2018-2019

Shipwrecked: An Entertainment was the first production for Evans HS Theatre of the 2018-2019 school year. Our fantastic cast included Keyshawn Morgan as the lead, surrounded by talented Trojan thespians.

Shipwrecked! An Entertainment tells the grand tale of Louis De Rougemont, a famous adventurer who gets lost on the high seas and ultimately ends up seeing fantastic things and meeting exotic people. The story is told to the audience by Louis himself, who is proud to have the viewers come along, as he retells the story of his journey from the seas of England to the exotic lands of Aboriginal Australia and back again. He is aided in his retelling by two highly talented players, who play all of the people (and animals) that Louis meets along the way, all while providing sound effects and scenery changes, seamlessly. All might not be as it seems, however, as the truth of Louis' great tale is called into question by multiple experts.

Fall Sports Review
Fall sports have nearly ended and some of our Trojans have managed to finish their seasons with a strong showing. Senior Bowler, Patricia Rosales, led the lady Trojans to a 5th place finish in the district tournament. She handed in a stellar performance that left her in 1st place of all individual bowlers.  Patricia will compete in the state tournament at Boardwalk Bowl on November 7th.

The girls and boys swim teams compete in the district tournament and swimmers Jillian Williams, Shania Kissoonchand, Monica Sylvester, and Aniah Leathers dropped 6 seconds off their medley relay time. Aniah Leathers dropped 15 seconds off her 100 yard freestyle and placed 3rd in her heat. Shania Kissoonchand added a personal best in the 100 backstroke by dropping 7 seconds of her time. The boys did equally as well with Jeffrey Allen decreasing his 200 freestyle time by 20 seconds. Noel Richardson has our best 50 freestyle time this season at 28.25 seconds. Grayson Francis dropped his 100 breaststroke time to 1 min 36 seconds. Joshua Davis placed 4th in the 100 backstroke. Kris Jean Charles placed 3rd in his 50 freestyle heat and Jagdesh Persaud had the fastest 50 split time in his 200 medley relay with 33.08 seconds. We are looking forward to next season as all of our boys will be coming back and will continue to grow and improve.

Cross Country - Jahnile Registre
The boys and girls cross country track teams competed in districts and lone runner, Jahnile Registre, advanced to the state competition. Jahnile began the race in the top 20 and ended ranked as one of the top runners in the state. We expect great things from this sophomore as she continues to compete in cross country in the fall and track in the spring!

Winter Sports
All of our winter sports begin their season over the next couple of weeks. Boys soccer is hosting a preseason tournament on Monday, November 5th and then on Wednesday, November 7th. Stay connected and watch for more details as girls weightlifting, girls & boys basketball, soccer, and wrestling swing into action!

Coach Andrew Browne receives the AVCA Coaching Scholarship Award
The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) recently awarded Andrew Browne with one the 14 available 2018 Coaches 4 Coaches Scholarships - only two of whom were high school coaches.

The scholarship provides the opportunity for up-and-coming volleyball coaches to attend their first AVCA Convention. Scholarship recipients will have the opportunity to interact with successful coaches from all levels and explore the limitless networking and educational opportunities available at the AVCA Convention. Coach Browne will also get to keep stats at the high school All-American game.

Who or what has been your biggest coaching influence?
My first year of teaching I coached boys basketball and I worked with a man named John Jenkins.  He taught me just about everything I know about coaching. His passion and enthusiasm for the game and fair play was is infectious and I try as best I can to emulate it always.  Also, John Zloty, my high school coach, who taught how to play volleyball and he asked me to play as an 8th grader.  He would recruit kids to play from around the campus and I learned a very valuable lesson from him with that. You have to work to put your team together and you have to sell volleyball - especially if you are going to coach boys.

What are you most looking forward to at the 2018 AVCA Annual Convention?
Most of my kids do not play club volleyball as there are few or no nearby options. For the kids that have the ability to drive, it is simply too expensive to play club volleyball. So, as a result my kids are being introduced to the game in high school. Therefore, I need to learn several things, but mostly how to teach good technique quickly, because we have only two weeks from the start of practice until our first game. I need more touches that are quality as often as possible.  I will have kids on my varsity team who will have been playing volleyball for two weeks at that point playing against kids that have been playing club volleyball for years! Next, I want to teach serve and serve-receive better. My kids are athletic and quick, and we will always be good on the net, but it is passing that will be, and is our Achilles Heel.

* When not on the court, Mr. Browne teaches 11th grade English with just as much passion!
