The Trojan Express
Maynard Evans High School Community Brief
Tuesday, December 6, 2022
Evans Community Member,

Trojans, we have less than two weeks before our Winter Break and your dedication to your education is paramount. For the next eight days, we will have testing that encompasses Semester Common Final Exams, FAST Testing and STAR Testing for Math Courses. The importance of completing these tests with fidelity is impactful on your course grade, GPA and potential graduation requirements. The Testing Schedule is located below.

I would like to encourage you to take advantage of tutoring at Evans High School every Tuesday and Thursday after school. During this time you will be able to gain assistance from educators with in depth knowledge of Math, English, Science and Social Studies. This opportunity is vital for students who are struggling and can benefit from additional assistance. More information is located below.

Finally, I would like to emphasize the importance to attendance. It is vital that our Trojans are in attendance at school every day and on time. There is a direct correlation to knowledge attainment and test scores. With test scores carrying such a major impact — graduation requirements, course success, college acceptances, scholarship awards — the direct correlation is in the positive for students who are in attendance. Please assist us with helping your Trojan with daily punctual attendance for every class.

In Trojan Pride,

Mrs. Nelson-Warren
Principal

This Week's Motivational Moment!
Evans High School remembers an African-American hero on the 81st anniversary of Pearl Harbor Day.
Eighty-one years ago this Wednesday, December 7th, forces of the Japanese Imperial Navy suddenly attacked U.S. military bases on Oahu, Hawaii. Dorie Miller stepped forward into action very quickly and was recognized by the U.S. Navy for his bravery.
Honored on a U.S. postage stamp, Doris "Dorie" Miller (October 12, 1919 - November 24, 1943) was a Messman Third Class that the United States Navy noted for his incredible bravery during the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. In addition to manning a 0.50 caliber heavy machine gun (which he was not trained on) and striking several incoming enemy aircraft, he successfully managed to pull his wounded ship's captain out of harm's way. Dorie Miller was the first African-American to be awarded the Navy Cross, the third highest honor awarded by the U.S. Navy at the time.
"AIR RAID ON PEARL HARBOR . . . THIS IS NO DRILL."
Urgent radiogram reporting the Pearl Harbor air raid on the island of Oahu, Hawaii by aircraft of the Japanese Imperial Navy (National Archives). On this date 81 years ago this Wednesday, more than 2,400 persons lost their lives and many more were wounded in the attack that moved America into World War II.
