The Trojan Express
Maynard Evans High School Community Brief
Monday, June 6, 2022
Evans Community Member,

Welcome to Evans High School, "A Place of High Achievement" where our focus is on literacy, rigor and relationships. Our school's pillars of pride, determination and perseverance continue to be on display daily by our students, staff and community.

I would like to thank everyone for a great school year. I am grateful for the support and involvement of our families and community this year. I wish you and your families all of the best for a restful and relaxing summer vacation.

The Class of 2022 has left an indelible mark on Evans High School, including accumulating over $6 million in scholarships! I am very proud to be associated with this group of students. They have a unique identity in the hearts of our faculty and staff. I was heartened to hear, during the course of our student speakers, how many referenced their teachers in their speeches. Everyone knows great teachers do not work for the check nor do they work for the recognition. They work for the satisfaction of graduation day, when the fruits of their labor cross the stage and receive their diplomas. I am immensely proud of our teachers and the work they accomplished with the Class of 2022.

The best advice I can give students and parents is to trust the process, allow our teachers to do the work, and reinforce the need for student self-advocacy and hard work. Nothing less than the relentless pursuit of excellence should be our expectation as we achieve results through our ability to exhibit Pride, Determination and Perseverance.

In closing, as we look to 2022-2023 school year, I encourage you to visit our website and social media platforms throughout the summer for the latest EHS news. We also plan to run several special summer editions of The Trojan Express over the summer.
Enjoy the summer break and I look forward to seeing everyone back on campus Wednesday, August 10 for an on-time start to the 2022-2023 school year!

On May 23rd Mr. Russ Salerno, representative of the Pennington Scholarship, and the 2022 Pennington Scholarship recipients were able to have lunch in the Evans College and Career Resource Center. During this time, Mr. Salerno shared memories of Coach Pennington and his time as a Trojan. The student-athletes were very inquisitive regarding Coach Pennington and his tenure at Evans as well as the experiences of Mr. Salerno as a basketball player and student. We are very grateful for the support of the Pennington Scholarship.

About the Coach Pennington Scholarship
Mr. Fred Pennington coached basketball from 1960 - 1976 at Evans High School. He grew from being a basketball and football coach to Evan’s athletic director and then went on to serve as the school’s assistant principal. Before retiring in 1990, Coach Pennington impacted thousands of lives, instilling values and teaching life lessons that helped shape generations of students who are now giving back to today’s students through this scholarship in Coach’s honor.

Did you know???
Making sense of the chart for our Trojans: This statistic shows how many people graduate from four-year institutions within six years of enrolling — whether they take time off in that period or are a student the entire time. The years in the chart reflect the deadline for graduation to meet this criteria, not the actual year of graduation. For example, 63% of people who enrolled in 2013 had graduated by 2019.

Blueprint for Success
The 2022 NBA Finals are now underway between the Boston Celtics and the Golden State Warriors of San Francisco. To this day, former Celtic Bill Russell remains one of the top players in NBA history and when he was not on the court, he was a major champion for civil rights.
Bill Russell won an NCAA championship, Olympic Gold Medal, and NBA title, all in one year. He went on to win eleven NBA titles in thirteen seasons, the last two as a player coach with no assistants. All told, in the twenty-one years Russell played organized basketball he won championships eighteen times.

Bill Russell faced a number of challenges growing up. For example, when he was eight years old, his father moved the family out of Louisiana and settled in Oakland, California. While there, they fell into poverty and Russell spent his childhood living in a series of public housing projects. And he did not start out as a very good basketball player. Although Russell was a good runner and jumper and had large hands, at first he did not understand the game and was cut from the team at Herbert Hoover Junior High School. As a freshman at McClymonds High School in Oakland, Russell was almost cut again. However, he stayed with it and was later part of the California All Stars. One of his great secrets to learning the game was reading. He would constantly read sports publications looking for clues as to how defend against opponents' moves on the court.

In the NBA, Russell made defense his calling card, blocking shots, not into the stands as we see so many players doing today. Russell would block the ball to a teammate or snatch it cleanly out of the air. There are no stats on this. The NBA didn’t measure blocks. Russell invented them. Before him, centers were encouraged to stay flat footed as a defensive practice. Russell went against this methodology, using instinct to create his own. Above all, he was a team player.

Whether you are basketball fan or not, here are some of Bill Russell's inspirational quotes on success in life:

Russell On Commitment
“Commitment separates those who live their dreams from those who live their lives regretting the opportunities they have squandered.”

Russell On Respect for Parents
“Philosophically all I've ever done was to try to never shame my father and mother.”

Russell On Mentoring Kids
“There are no other people’s children in the United States. There are only next-generation Americans.”

Russell On Relationships
"Friendship is a full-time job."

Russell On Reading
"My most prized possession was my library card from the Oakland Public Library.”

Russell On Integrity
“If you really have integrity, there are very few people who can insult you, or honor you.”

Thank you for reading and have a wonderful week!
