Maynard Evans High School Community Brief
Monday, November 15, 2021
Evans Community Member,

Welcome to Evans High School, "A Place of High Achievement" where our focus is on literacy, rigor and relationships. Our school's pillars of pride, determination and perseverance continue to be on display daily by our students, staff and community.

Thank you to everyone that participated in last Tuesday's PTSA/SAC meeting. Your support was most appreciated. If you are a member of our school community and missed the meeting, please join us next month for our final PTSA/SAC meeting of 2021 on December 14 at 5:30pm in the media center. Special thank you to our PTSA president, Ms. Venus Bouie and our SAC Chair, Ms. Alayna Riggins for their leadership.

This past Thursday was Veterans Day; a very special day set out to thank the millions of American men and women that swore their lives to protect the freedoms and liberties we all enjoy today. Our senior class officer coordinated a special recognition ceremony to honor our Veterans here at Evans. We are so proud of our veterans and the Evans High School community salute each and every one of them listed below! You are heroes.

Veterans at Evans High School:

  • Petty Officer Second Class Lawrence Bolden - US Navy 11 years (Social Science)
  • Master Gunnery Sergeant Thackery Dancy - US Marines 30 Years (NJROTC)
  • E-4 SPC Amaryllis Farrell - US Army 6 years (Math)
  • 1st Lieutenant Mary Hamilton - US Army Nurse 5 years (Clinic Registered Nurse)
  • Lieutenant Commander Shannon McMillan - US Navy 33 years (NJROTC)
  • E-6 Petty Officer First Class Joyce Laster-Reedom - US Navy 20 years (NJROTC)
  • Richmond Vernon - Army Reserves 3 years (Social Science)
Congratulations to our 79 seniors who passed their recent ACT exam, which now placed them in good standing to receive their Diplomas in May. The excitement students feel when they are able to achieve a milestone that has required perseverance and determination needs to be celebrated. We are proud of them. Our expectation, as a unified staff charged with ensuring that every student has a promising and successful future is that our remaining students who have milestones to reach, continue.

This the final academic week prior to Thanksgiving break as Evans High school will be closed on November 22nd – 26th. We will welcome back students on November 29th. During this special time of year, we should all reflect upon the things we are thankful for; I want to take time to thank each teacher, staff member, and administrator for their daily dedication towards making Evans High, a place where pride, determination and perseverance are displayed daily.

Thank you so much for your continued support and I wish our students, families and staff a Happy Thanksgiving.

In Trojan Pride,

Mr. Bailey
Principal

Food for Thought
1) Many students are losing out on college financial aid:
Research shows that many college students and high school seniors don't really understand what the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) can do for them:
2) Number of Trojan seniors completing the FAFSA is down vs. 2020:

3) Nov. 11 was Veterans Day. The number of US veterans is shrinking:
