The Trojan Express
Maynard Evans High School Community Brief
Tuesday, October 5, 2021
Evans Community Member,

Welcome to Evans High School, "A Place of High Achievement" where our focus is on literacy, rigor and relationships. Our school's pillars of pride, determination and perseverance continue to be on display daily by our students, staff and community.

Working to your potential is the key! Remember, this is the last week of the first nine weeks. For colleges and universities, you are what you put on paper. While our transcripts do not reflect 9-week grades, transcripts reflect semester grades, and your 9-week grades represent half of the semester grade. I encourage all of our Trojans to complete any missing assignments or projects as soon as possible. We want each student to earn the grades they are capable of when the quarter ends.

On Tuesday, October 12th we will also be hosting our monthly PTSA/School Advisory Council (SAC) meeting at 5:30 PM in our media center. If you have a student at Evans, I invite you to participate. These meetings normally conclude by 7pm. We will conduct nominations for officers so we encourage your presence.

Our teachers have all been working hard in preparing for our upcoming Virtual Open House on Tuesday, October 12th. Teachers will release their presentations at 6pm. This event is not a live virtual session; teachers have pre-recorded videos to share via your student’s canvas accounts. Conversely, this is still an excellent opportunity for parents & guardians to make a connection with teachers and learn more about their students' classes and course expectations. I do hope you will carve out some time early Tuesday evening to participate.

I would like to thank our Trojan staff and students for a fun-spirited Homecoming last week. Special thank yous to SGA sponsors Ms. Steadman and Ms. Verzi coupled with our SGA students for their hard work and dedication.

Mr. Bailey
Principal

SAFE - Start with HELLO Week
Evans High School enjoyed celebrating Start With Hello Week in September. Start With Hello is a national initiative and is comprised of small but powerful actions to promote inclusion and to support students who are showing signs of loneliness or social isolation. SAFE Ambassadors and SGA partnered to encourage students to interact with students and faculty they don't often get to connect with daily.
Trojan Athletics
Required Extended Tutoring
Evans is committed to pushing our athletes to excel on and off the court. Students who have earned a D/ F on their 1st progress report are required to attend extended tutoring from 2:40- 3:30with the individual teachers in their classroom or in the cafeteria Tuesdays and Thursdays until the next grade report is submitted. Once students complete tutoring at 3:30 they can attend practice/ games. If they do not, they risk being pulled off the field/ court.
Fall Sports Highlights
Volleyball - The girls recently had a tough match against Jones on September23 but were able to come out victorious through endurance and teamwork!

Swimming - Coach Steadman and Coach White are proud of the progress the athletes have made throughout the season. Our swimmers come from all stages of ability so it is always exciting when they begin to drop their times and are able to be competitive with the other schools.

Evans Receives $10,000 from NCL
Ms. Steadman and Evans recognized by a major cruise line!
Ms. Steadman teaches AP Environmental Science and Honors Environmntal Science at Evans High School which is a Title 1 School in Orlando, FL. She consistently goes above and beyond to ensure that all her students are engaged and understanding the material. She makes learning exciting with all the fun labs and activities she brings into the classroom.

This year with the pandemic, doing labs was difficult but she found labs that students in class and at home could participate in and enjoy. She spends many hours outside of school planning lessons to ensure her students are ready to pass their AP test. Last year was her first year doing AP Environmental Science and she increased the pass rate by 700%.

Ms. Steadman doesn’t just teach. She also sponsors the Student Government Association (SGA) SEL-ebrate club and coaches boys/girls swim team and girls soccer. With SGA, Ms. Steadman does her best to make every students voice heard and brings fun activities to lunches and after school. This year even with the pandemic she hosted lunchtime games, spirit days, and club meetings after school for students to bond virtually and in person. Ms. Steadman is the teacher that students know they can go to for anything, even those she has never taught before!
Homecoming Spirit Week - "Dancing Through the Decades"
Recap for the Community and thank you from our SGA!
This past week our Trojans participated in the Homecoming Spirit Week. The theme was Dancing Through The Decades. The week started with a peace, love and happiness day as students dress in Hippie attire. Tuesday students showed their squad day spirit and matched with their friends. Wednesday was senior citizen day and students went all out with the gray hair to the canes and walkers. Thursday had the most participation as they celebrated the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s during Throwback Thursday. We rounded out the week with Blackout Friday and the Homecoming Football Game versus Apopka, then the Homecoming Dance at Evans High School. This week will definitely be one to remember!

SGA also wants to thank all the faculty, alumni, and community members who have donated to the Homecoming Dance with drinks and snacks. We really appreciate everything that was dropped off.
