Maynard Evans High School Community Brief
Wednesday, May 5, 2021
Evans Community Member,

Thank you for your commitment to making Evans High School, "A Place of High Achievement." Our focus is on Literacy, Rigor, and Relationships and our school's pillars of Pride, Determination, and Perseverance continue to be on display by our students, staff and community.

This week is Teacher Appreciation Week. I am so proud of the effort put forth by all of our staff. Since April of last year, our teachers have had to adapt their instruction under a "blended model" to reach our students learning from home as well as those physically in the classroom - often simultaneously. Moreover, they have had to work around strict new guidelines pertaining to Covid health & safety at all times. From a leadership perspective, I could not be more proud of our Trojan staff. Please take a moment to send an email to our teachers – Trojan staff. A simple thank you would mean so much and will not take much of your time.

Thank you, teachers and staff! Without your contributions and your professionalism, especially this past year, we simply don’t have a school. You ARE appreciated!

This week we continue with testing season as our seniors continue their Common Final Exams. We will also be administering the Florida Standards Assessment Reading exam (please see testing schedule below). Our Trojans and their teachers have worked very hard since last August to reach this point, so I hope all students sitting for an exam this week will get a good night's rest the evening before a test and eat a good breakfast the day of the test.

Deputy Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Maria Vazquez, has released another OCPS YouTube Community Update which includes content relevant to our Evans community. The video is only about seven minutes long, but she touches upon the latest Covid news, vaccination clinics, graduation, summer school, and more.
Please click here to watch her update.

Enjoy Teacher Appreciation Week '21!

Go Trojans!

Student Spotlight
Promise Program - University of Florida
Congratulations Damian Britton for being chosen for the Promise Program at the University of Florida. Damian will enter the University of Florida this summer and major in Chemistry working towards becoming a Doctor of Pharmacy.
What is UF Promise?
UF Promise is a program aimed at first-year college students at the University of Florida. The program works in conjunction with the Office of Admissions, where students are selectively chosen upon entering their first year at UF. Through the admissions process, the university selects candidates for the program who will benefit from additional scholarly support and enrichment for success at UF. Through our program, we encourage these students to grow and meet their full potential beyond their freshman year.

How does it work?
Promise students must begin their first semester during the Summer B semester at UF. There, they are initiated into the Promise Learning & Involvement Community (PLIC), where other Promise students like them share the same residence area on campus. This opportunity made possible through UF Housing allows for peer networking, early college friendships, and lasting relationships among fellow Gators and UF Promise scholars.

Upon arriving at UF Campus, Promise students are invited to attend the OAS Connect Program. Our annual OAS Connect event lets incoming college freshman greet their fellow peers, discover campus resources, and meet their Promise Peer Coaches (PCs), all while becoming accustomed to a university setting for the first time.
Curriculum
Students across campus have been preparing for End of Course Exams, Advanced Placement Exams, Florida Standards Assessments and Common Final Exams. Above, is a review for our U.S. History students (11th Graders) on Reconstruction.
Spring Orchestra Performance
Evans High School’s Orchestra, directed by Mr. Morales, has been practicing diligently preparing for their Spring Concert on Wednesday, April 5th at 7pm in the Courtyard.
Academic Signing Day
Friday, April 30th
On Friday, April 30th, our Seniors participated in Academic Signing Day. Seniors were celebrated for their commitment to attend their university/college, technical school and the military. Students were able to sign their commitment certificates with their counselors. Our students will venture across the United States as well as one student who has committed to attend Richmond University - The American University in London after graduation.
