Maynard Evans High School Community Brief
Tuesday, November 10, 2020
Evans Community Member,

Thank you for your commitment to making Evans High School, "A Place of High Achievement." Our focus is on Literacy, Rigor, and Relationships and our school's pillars of Pride, Determination, and Perseverance continue to be on display by our students, staff and community.

Thank You
As we closed out week 4 of Quarter 2 last week, I would like to say thank you to all of our teachers and staff for the hard work and dedication shown towards our students for their continued academic growth and social development during this pandemic and blended instructional model. I can thank our staff enough for the job they do on a daily basis to support our Evans Trojans.

Checking Student Progress
Parents, this is a great time to check on your student's progress thus far:
  • Have you spoken with your student about the goals for this quarter, especially knowing that semester 1 grades are an average of Quarter 1 and Quarter 2?
  • Have you reviewed attendance with your student?
  • Can we confirm that your student is arriving to class on time (LaunchEd, Face-to-Face) every day?
  • Lastly, do you know how your child is prioritizing their work?

With Thanksgiving and the Winter Break on the horizon, monitoring your student performance and seeking assistance now, will make the rest of the quarter, semester and year better for your student

Evans High School Salutes Veterans!
Veterans Day falls on November 11, if you know someone who has served in the military or pass someone wearing the uniform this week, please take a quick moment to thank them for their service. As Americans, we owe the members of our armed forces a tremendous debt of gratitude for their sacrifice and service.

Serving in the armed forces is an option that many students choose after graduation and go on to great accomplishments from the skills they learn while serving; and some of those same skills are being taught right here on our campus. Although joining the our Naval Academy JROTC program here at Evans High School does not mean a student will go on to be in the military, it does teach many of the same skills. Leadership, discipline, teamwork, pride, and respect are a few of the top traits learned in the program. The students learn the attention to detail necessary to reach high levels of success. The belonging to the program helps them build pride in themselves through these actions and promotes a positive environment for all.

Our highly successful NJROTC program is a great reflection of their instructors, Petty Officer Laster-Reedom and Master Gunnery Sargent Dancy, and I thank them for their guidance and support at Evans High.

In Trojan Pride,

Mr. Bailey
Proud Principal
Evans High School

Trojan Student Spotlight
An inspirational word and song from our Choral Director, Ms. Edith Wright.

As many of you know (or maybe not), the arts were hit hard with COVID. When you are used to making vocal music with your students daily and then not be able to, it takes your breath away and sends a form of grief.

The majority of my kids are launch Ed. My Concert Choir started out with 1 face-to-face and now I have 5. We meet 4th period and 8th period daily but again - mostly on teams and unmuting one at a time.

We were supposed to record a video to submit for a virtual concert. At the last minute, I was down to 1 tenor and NO basses. We have only sang together for one other 30 minute rehearsal on Wednesday. These kids are amazing and I love them. Although it didn’t go as planned, I left school with a heart 💜 full of JOY!!!

I’m one who celebrates EVERY victory. Growing up in church, we called that Climbing Jacob’s Ladder - every round goes higher and higher. I hope you can find some joy.

Check out the Evans Concert Choir in action!
The College Board Opportunity Scholarships program helps students stay on track with the college planning process while offering them chances for scholarships for each college planning action they complete. The program is currently open for students in the Class of 2021 and it will open for students in the Class of 2022 in December.

New Trojan Spotlight
Ms. Sotolongo, Staffing Specialist
My name is Carolina A. Sotolongo, I was born and raised in Miami, Florida. I have over 10 years of teaching experience with Miami-Dade County Public Schools and look forward to many more years of experience with Orange County Public Schools. My credentials include a Master’s Degree in Reading Education from Florida International University, a Bachelor’s Degree in Exceptional Student Education from Barry University, and Florida Teaching Certifications in the following areas: English grades 6-12, ESE grades K-12, Reading K-12, ESOL Endorsement and Gifted Endorsement. Currently, I am enrolled in an Educational Specialist program for Educational Leadership with Nova Southeastern University. In my spare time, you will find me spending time with my family and friends, traveling or reading a good book. I also enjoy going to the beach and taking long walks.

I am proud to be a part of the Trojan family. What I love most about working at Evans High School is the family environment that is fostered daily. Our goal is to ensure that our students are being provided with the best education. I have learned that if students construct their own learning experiences, they will not only retain information longer, but they will also become more confident in their abilities. I am purposeful and deliberate in my mission to provide increased learning opportunities for all students while educating and informing schools, families and community members. I truly believe that education is the key to success for young students. As an educator, I hope to motivate students in ascertaining their inner strengths and abilities, as well as discovering what truly inspires them. I aim to provide a stimulating learning environment that encourages students to trust their own opinions, while fostering confidence for students to realize their full potential.

If I could offer our students a piece of advice, I would say that no matter how hard or difficult the challenge is, know that you can overcome it.

HUB Happenings!
Wendy Quirino is a part of the amazing group of community members that committed to supporting our students at Evans High School through mentorship last school year.

Though the program ended early due to COVID-19, Wendy remained committed to supporting her mentee. To this day, she still stays in contact and is returning this year to support more students. Wendy shared, “I have been so blessed to be a mentor. The program has highlighted the incredible need in our community and the fact that all of us can make a difference. Tyel is an amazing young man with so much potential and as a mentor I had the opportunity to fill in some gaps between the school and his home community.”

Message from our New PTSA/SAC President
My name is Venus Bouie and I am elated to serve as your new PTSA President for the 2020-2021 school year! Not only am I an employee at Evans, but I am also a parent of two students here as well. For the past two years, I have volunteered my services with the Green Machine Marching Band as a Band Booster.

As the PTSA President, I understand the importance of parent engagement. It plays a major role in not only the lives of our students but in that of those of other parents, educators and the community. My goal is to enrich the lives of student here at Evans and get as many parents, students, faculty/stuff and the community involved and educated on what is going on here at Evans. With the participation and help of our community, we will be able to work collaboratively to provide various resources to enhance our students learning and overall success.

I take pride in being a part of this amazing organization and I look forward to working with each and every one of you to help make this vision a reality.
