Your Community Brief from Evans High School
Monday, September 14, 2020

Thank you for your patience as we continue to work to support each and every Trojan. Parents, if your student is experiencing issues or have questions related to academic instruction and technology (computer issues, CANVAS, BBB) please submit your concern to https://tinyurl.com/evanstech If you have concerns related to attendance, etc. please visit our school website and connect to evanshs@ocps.net link It is our goal to respond to your concern in a timely manner.

We have reached the mid-point of the 1st 9 weeks. Progress Reports will be available on Thursday, September 17th via Skyward. This will be an ideal time to review your student academic successes or identify concerns; be sure to check in with your student and look over their Canvas with them. In the event you need to schedule a virtual parent conference, please contact our student services offices at 407-522-3400 ext. 6232249

At this time, we are now offering families the opportunity to examine their current learning platforms, either Face-to-Face or LaunchEd@home. If you feel your high school child needs to change, you can request it. Changes will not start until the second marking period, which begins on October 13th. Please carefully consider any move, as your child's schedule will change in more ways than just the platform. It is quite possible, as we continue to focus on student and faculty safety, that a schedule will change teachers, periods, lunches and even courses (especially electives). Very important, please look for confirmation from a school official, student services... that your request has been granted. This will come directly from your assigned Guidance Counselor or Assistant Principal, Mrs. Heather Kreider.

To make a change from Face-to-Face to LaunchED@Home and vice versa, you will need to request the educational model change using the Evans Survey found on our website under our student services tab or through the link below. You will need to fill out a new survey for each child.

Evans Educational Model Change Link

The deadline to submit your request is next Friday, 9/18/2020. We will not be able to honor any requests after that date. Please be mindful that you will need to be comfortable with the choice until January. You will have another opportunity to evaluate your child's learning platform at the semester break.

Student Feature
The NAACP's ACT-SO (Academic, Cultural, Technical and Scientific Olympics) Afro-Academic Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics is a year-long enrichment & achievement program for high school students of African/African American descent. It is designed to stimulate and encourage high academic & cultural achievement of participants.

ACT-SO culminates in a local and national competition where students compete for awards and prizes totaling over $100,000. We had 3 Evans High students participate in the virtual regional competition here in Orlando, FL: Giannina Daniels-Lajon, Ben Joseph and Anuvidya Singh.

Giannina received the Silver Medal in Drawing. Anuvidya received the Bronze Medal in Painting. Ben Joseph won Gold in Painting and participated in the national virtual competition that occurred on August 13th.

Ben Joseph's art piece won Gold in Painting
Student Ben Joseph who won Gold in painting stated "I used acrylic paint and gouache on a 16x20 canvas board. The painting is supposed to represent the Black community and the hope we have to be able to get out of our situation in America, and while we can always see the hope on the other side we are still held back by the "cell bars" (Systematic oppression, racism and discrimination). This painting means a lot to me because in a way this is how I feel everyday being Black in America."
