Your Community Brief from Evans High School
Monday, August 31, 2020

This past week we finished our third week of the first 9 weeks. Thank you to our face-to-face students and their families for the measures they have taken to  support one another and their teachers with social distancing expectations while also focusing  on their academics. As a school, we are all making the necessary adjustments with fluid changes to campus safety protocols. I want to also recognize all of our "LaunchED" instructional students who on Friday also completed day 15 of school working from home. For the rest of this first nine-week quarter, students will attend school in whichever learning model was selected by them and their parents.

Evans High staff team members are committed to the health & safety procedures set forth by the CDC and our school board. In the event a situation occurs as it relates to COVID-19 where staff, students and parents require notification, please know that we will follow the required protocols that govern each unique situation. Parents, please remind students that the masks with the ventilators on the side are not approved and we will provide an approved mask when arriving on campus if one is needed.

As we begin this 4th week of school, athletic practices will officially start with athletic competitions starting in the weeks to come. Our coaches, student athletes are excited about the opportunity to restart. It is imperative that our student athletes continue to support safety measures that are place. These measures will be covered by our coaches in-depth daily. For more information about practice schedules, games and passes, guidelines, head coach information, and Evans Fall sports, please visit https://evansathletics.com/ or you can reach our Athletic Director Greg Thompson at 407-522-3400 ex 6232519.

Make it a great week Trojans!

Face Masks
School Board members discussed revisions to Policy EBBA - Disease Preventions; Face Coverings that include recommendations made by the Medical Advisory Committee. After thoughtful discussion, the board voted to adopt the following revisions:

* A face covering shall not be required for individuals who have been approved for a face covering waiver due to a medical condition that prevents the individual from being able to safely wear a face covering. A medical certification from a health care provider and supporting documentation submitted by the individual shall be submitted to school officials for review/determination by the district medical advisor. The district may also provide, at its discretion, supporting documents for review pertaining to the individual. Until such time as the waiver is approved, the individual requesting the exemption will be required to wear the proper face covering while inside a school/facility, or other property and/or vehicle owned, leased, or operated by the School Board. Alternatives, such as face shields and/or other measures, shall be considered on a case-by-case basis for the individual granted the exemption. In accordance with guidance provided by the Florida Department of Health of Orange County , medically fragile students should not attend face-to-face instruction during this pandemic.  Note: Revisions to the policy were made at the table and may not be reflected in the online policy.

* Any mask with an exhalation valve (respirator) is not permitted.

* Neck gaiters and neck buffs will no longer be permitted to be worn as a face covering.

Monday's Motivational Moment!mm
We appreciate our teachers!!

One of our wonderful teachers, Mrs. Edwards, ran her LaunchEd session next to what is most important for her ... the reasons why she is an educator. During this unprecedented time, it is imperative to remember why we started and why we continue forward and Mrs. Edwards has letters from previous students hanging to remind her of her this every school day!

Mrs. Edwards has a dozen letters from past students posted on the wall a few feet from her chair as a reminder as to why she became a teacher and loves working with our Trojans!
----------------

These past few months have been challenging for K-12 teachers all over. They have had to transition from their normal teaching practices to remote learning, setting up new lesson plans, devising and recording instructional videos, preparing materials, and finding new ways to check-in on and connect with their students. With doing their best with face-to-face students and LaunchEd students simultaneously, they also juggle the effects of COVID-19 on their families and personal lives just like the rest of us.

Here at Evans, our teachers are using existing resources and tools in new ways, and developing systems and practices that are wholly new along the lines of digital learning. This they are doing on a daily basis while maintaining the best of attitudes. Of course, I am not surprised by the speed, innovation, creativity, brilliance, sensitivity and care our Trojan teachers have shown as in my view, Evans has some of the finest educators you will find anywhere!!

Now here we are rolling into week #4 already. Should you have the opportunity to interact with one of our great Evans teachers this week, kindly take a moment to say thank you. You see, while the delivery method of learning may be altered somewhat for now, the level of effort Evans' teachers are putting forth backed up by OCPS' rigorous curriculum, has not faltered. I am so proud of each and every one of our teachers. Go Trojans!
