Thank you for your commitment to making Evans High School, "A Place of High Achievement." Our focus is on Literacy, Rigor, and Relationships and our school's pillars of Pride, Determination, and Perseverance continue to be on display by our students, staff and community.
Happy New Year!
I would like to extend a warm welcome back to all of our students, families and our Trojan faculty. I hope that each of you enjoyed your winter break and had many opportunities to celebrate with family and friends.
We now have officially entered both the 3rd quarter and 2nd semester of the
2019-2020 school year. A new year ushers in a sense of renewal and commitment to excellence in teaching and learning. Twice a year students get a fresh start - at the beginning of the school year and at the start of the second semester, and this is an opportunity that our students must seize.
Teachers will be hard at work ensuring they deliver the best instruction possible. In order to receive this instruction, it is imperative that students arrive on time and are ready to learn and in their seats no later than 7:20 AM daily. Being even a few minutes late distracts students from learning. Excellent attendance is the first step in preparing our students for academic success. School attendance matters - every class, every day! We look forward to a safe, productive, and positive second semester!
Report Cards
Student report cards went out on January 14th during 4th period classes. This is a great opportunity to review your student's progress made towards achieving their personal and academic goals. I encourage you and your student to devise a plan on how to finish the year strong.

Infinite Scholars Night - January 15th
Parents of Seniors, do not miss this opportunity to meet with College and University Admissions Representatives for a chance to be accepted and awarded scholarships on-site. Our Annual Infinite Scholars Night event will take place on January 15th in our gymnasium from 4pm until 7pm. National, Regional and Local Colleges and Universities will participate. Parents, please ensure that your student has the following:
- Unofficial High School Transcripts
- ACT/SAT Scores
- Two Letters of Recommendation & Resume
- Dress for Success

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday
Please remember that we will not have school on Monday, January 20th in recognition of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. federal holiday. As we celebrate the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. I wanted to share this clip for you to view the impact this great man continues to have on our world today.

Holiday Food Giveaway 2019
On Saturday, December 14th Evans held their annual Holiday Food Giveaway and served over 500 families.
Special thanks for Second Harvest, Humana, UCF volunteers, and our students and staff. Having over 300 volunteers made light work for all the hands involved. Thanks for another great year!

Trojan Teacher Spotlight
Ms. McLeod, 10th Grade English
Q: Where did you attend college?
A: Florida State University. Go Noles!
Q: What is your degree in?
A: English/Philosophy and my graduate work is in Creative Writing.
Q: What do you like to do outside of school?
A: I love spending time with my kids and traveling, especially for live music. I also have a little side gardening and planting business that keeps me happy and busy.
Q: What do you like most about working at Evans/being a Trojan?
A: I absolutely adore my students. They are ambitious, and brilliant and make me laugh every day. School is never boring. I also feel incredibly grateful for such a supportive administrative staff and the teachers I teach with a truly remarkable team!
Q: A piece of advice for our students?
A: Show up. Sometimes you may feel like nothing is going right and you're not even sure you're going in the right direction. Show up anyway. Amazing things are going to happen and you need to be there for it!

Trojan Staff Spotlight
Ms. Fariba Akbari, ESE Support
Q: Where did you attend college?
A: I attended School of Psychology in Tehran-Iran for two years.
Q: What is your degree in?
A: I studied Early Childhood and Developmental and Child Psychology.
Q: What do you like to do outside of school?
A: I love to spend time with my family. I also like mentoring and volunteering at Nursing Homes, Pediatric units at local Hospitals, and helping with youth homeless and Suicide Prevention Group.
Q: What do you like most about working at Evans/Being a Trojan?
A: I always put our students First. Being able to Support and help students in a variety of ways that is available. Also Team Work. I believe Together Everyone Achieve More .
Q: A piece of advice for our students?
A: I have few of those... Most important one is to pick and choose your friends wisely. Be trustworthy. Love people and be committed to doing your best in everything. Always know that you are special and that you matter.

Trojan Athletics

Taymon Lynum Signs to University of Nebraska
It is official! Tamon Lynum completed his high school career early and will be attending the University of Nebraska beginning this spring. Tamon has signed with the Cornhuskers and will attend Nebraska on a football scholarship.

Wrestling
The boys and girls wrestling teams, under the direction of Coaches Richmond Vernon, Andrew Doeg, and Shontay Blakeney are well into their season and steadily making a name for themselves. In a recent match hosted at Evans, the team outscored Lake Tohopekaliga High School 66-12. The Trojans won all but one weight class and nearly every match ended with a pin from our wrestlers! Sheriff Mina was able to make it out to one of our matches as well as the firefighters from the nearby firehouse, Station 42. Our wrestlers invited both and were thrilled that they showed up!

Basketball
Both boys and girls basketball participated in tournament play during the winter holidays. The boys outscored Columbia (67-55) to take the championship in the Hitchcock Tournament. The girls finished in second place, losing by 1 point in the championship game of the Florida Prospects tournament.

Spring Sports
Spring sports are currently in conditioning and planning to begin by the end of this month. During the Spring, we offer baseball, softball, flag football, track & field, boys volleyball, boys weightlifting, boys and girls Lacrosse, and boys and girls tennis.

Student Spotlight
Trojans support Habitat for Humanity just prior to the winter break!
Our High School High Tech students, along with teacher
Ms. Angela Harriet, and our Future Leaders United program with Ms. Sandra Fatmi, worked to support Habitat for Humanity before the break to help build, paint, and beautify homes. The students actually engaged in a variety of construction projects that included framing, siding, painting, installations, sod work, and landscaping.

Academics - "Rigor in the Classroom"
Ms. Dwyer's reading classes utilized DOK charts (Depth of Knowledge) to deepen their comprehension and close reading of their text. Students are working independently to write their own questions with the use of the DOK level 3 questions stems & scaffolding questions.

Forever a Trojan
Mr. Cadet currently serves as the Volunteer Services Coordinator at the Central Florida Urban League. They have partnered with Evans Community School to offer students a monthly on-campus community service opportunity called Trojans Do Good. He recently came to campus to speak with our students about these opportunities. Thanks for giving back your time and talents!

IB Back Ceremony - Class of 2019 returns!
Our Class of 2019 IB students returned to celebrate their IB Diploma awards and catch up with Trojan staff and current students. Congrats to the IB Diploma holders from the Class of 2019! Continue to make us proud!

The cost of education rose +2.1% in 2019. The good news is that this rate is down from +2.6% in 2018.
* The chart shows the monthly inflation index from December 2018 to December 2019. The data for December 2019 was released on Tuesday, Dec. 14 from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. For the year the cost of education was up +2.1%.
