Your Community Brief from Evans High School
Wednesday, November 6, 2019

Thank you for your commitment to making Evans High School, "A Place of High Achievement." Our focus is on Literacy, Rigor, and Relationships and our school's pillars of Pride, Determination, and Perseverance continue to be on display by our students, staff and community.

As we have entered the 2nd nine weeks of school, I would like to say thank you to all teachers and staff for the hard work and dedication shown towards our students for their continued academic growth and social development. The students, teachers, and staff have built up some powerful momentum turning into November. I challenge our Trojans to keep up their daily efforts, being mindful of daily attendance working to maximize all available in-class instructional time.

Parents, now is the time to act! Some of you may receive a phone call from me this week as it relates to your student having one or more unsatisfactory grades. In our effort to assist your student with additional support, all instructional classroom staff offer tutoring on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:20pm until 2:40pm and additional tutoring hours are extended via our cafeteria from 2:45pm until 4:30pm. Students are fed via our OCPS, "Supper Program" and have access to OCPS transportation on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Veteran's Day falls on the second Monday in November this year. If you know someone who has served in the military or pass someone wearing the uniform this week, please take a quick moment to thank them for their service. As Americans, we owe the members of our armed forces a tremendous debt of gratitude for their sacrifice and service. Next week, the senior class will be honoring our service men and women on Veteran's Day, November 11th at the flagpole directly after school. It is also my pleasure to recognize and thank each of our members of the faculty that also have served our country. We look forward to honoring you and demonstrating appreciation for your service!

With Trojan Pride,

Rolando Bailey

Mr. Derek Wotton, is currently still active in the U.S. Army Reserves as a specialist. He is part of the 31 Bravo Military Police and has had one deployment. He most enjoys training and getting deployed.

Mr. Wotton's father, David, was also a sergeant in the U.S. Army from 1978-1983. His responsibilities included Combat Engineer, Ranger, Airborne/Air-Assault (which both were part of the same thing at the time). He mostly enjoyed training and time with others in the field.

He served from 1984 until 2016 as a Lieutenant Commander with responsibilities in Ballistic Missile Defense of South Eastern Europe. He has been active in every war since Desert Shield and Desert Storm including, Iraqi, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen and Syria. He enjoyed experiencing many different cultures and understanding that we are more alike than we are different.

Ms. Joyce Laster-Reedom, U.S. Navy (NJROTC)
Petty Officer Joyce Laster-Reedom is retired from the US Navy. She served from 1985-2005 as an E6. She performed administrative duties as the Leading Petty Officer in Charge. Performed additional duties as a Urinalysis Coordinator, President of the Morale and Welfare Committee, President of the First Class Petty Officer Association and as a Sexual Assault Victim Advocate for the City of San Diego. Though never deployed, she enjoyed the camaraderie, the paychecks, complexities of different jobs and being a leader as well as the responsibilities they bring with it; plus the opportunity to retire at an early age with payments and benefits for LIFE. Now supporting our NJORTC students in their goals, she says that if she was 18, she would do it again. GO NAVY!!
