Your Community Brief from Evans High School
Friday, September 6, 2019
|
Thank you for your commitment to making Evans High School, "A Place of High Achievement." Our focus is on Literacy, Rigor, and Relationships and our school's pillars of Pride, Determination, and Perseverance continue to be on display by our students, staff and community.
When we look at the destruction Hurricane Dorian caused in the Caribbean, we are fortunate to have missed the brunt of the storm; however, others were not as fortunate as we were. Let's think about how in the aftermath of this devastating storm, how we can support the families in the Bahamas. Nothing shows the character of an individual more than how you lead or assist in a moment of crisis or vulnerability. This is what we want to instill in our kids.
Starting on Monday, September 9th from (8am-3pm) our Evans High Community School will serve as the conduit to gather the following items:
- Deodorant
- Hand Sanitizer
- Soap
- Toilet Paper
- Toothpaste
- Wet Wipes
Thank you in advance for your support!
Due to the days missed of school, please adjust your calendar as the predetermined make-up days are October 18, 2019 (for Tuesday, September 3 closure) and Monday, November 25, 2019 of Thanksgiving week (for Wednesday, September 4).
Parents, please be prepared to review your student's first four weeks of academic performance as mid-term progress reports will be issued on Monday, September 16th.
With Trojan Pride,
Rolando Bailey

Student Spotlight
Ms. Ashley Brown, Mathematics
Ms. Brown graduated from THEE Maynard Evans High School in 2008. She later went on to graduate from UCF with a major in Pre-Law. She decided to get into education because she loves being able to make a difference in the lives of our future leaders.
Teaching at Evans allows her to share a special connection with the students because Ms. Brown too walked the halls of Evans High and shared many of the same experiences the students have. Once the students feel that you can relate to them in some way, they are more receptive to learning. Her passion for helping the students at Evans High also extends into the Pine Hills community. She enjoys volunteering with her local church to give back to the community in various ways. Ms. Brown also has two beautiful children that she loves spending time with and watching them grow.
We are so blessed to have yet another alumni join us this year full-time as a teacher after spending a year as a tutor in math classes last year.

College and Career Center
Vital Signs: Borrowing for College
We encourage our Trojans to explore all scholarship and grant program opportunities as they become available paying close attention to any application deadlines (see the
OCPS Scholarship Bulletin for starters). The chart below illustrates how the volume of student loan payments that are seriously late or delinquent have grown stunningly since 2012 and now comprise 35% of all "derogatory" loans according to the
New York Federal Reserve Bank. When loans like this go unpaid, it can be harmful to a college graduate's ability to obtain credit in the future for other important life goals such as getting a first home or getting married.
Note: HELOC = Home equity line of credi
t; chart shows outstanding seriously bad debt by quarter.
