Your Community Brief from Evans High School
Friday, March 29, 2019

Thank you for your commitment to making Evans High School, "A Place of High Achievement." Our focus is on Literacy, Rigor, and Relationships and our school's pillars of Pride, Determination, and Perseverance continue to be on display by our students, staff and community.

Welcome Back Trojans
I hope that you had a restful and relaxing Spring Break that allowed you to recharge as we are now already one week into the final quarter of the 2018-2019 school year.

"Be Present, Not Perfect."
Nothing is more appropriate to describe our collective expectation for our students as this quote. We expect students to be present and give it their all, even if, in the pursuit of perfection, they fall short.

I've attended induction ceremonies, recognitions, and numerous meetings where students are celebrated. This is a consistent theme - these are the students that are here every day, make it count during the day and make it count after school. We are entering the time when we absolutely need to give it our collective "all." I know that we will finish strong and do so with pride, determination, and perseverance!

FSA Writes Exam on Tuesday
As I mentioned in our last issue leading into the spring break, we now are poised to kick off the annual "testing season" in a few days beginning with the Florida Standards Writing Assessment for our freshmen and sophomores on Tuesday, April 2nd.

Tutoring
Specific students in FSA and EOC tested areas (English 1, English 2, Algebra 1, Geometry, U.S. History, and Biology) will be offered tutoring after school on Tuesday's and Thursdays from 3:00-4:30 pm. Students will be provided with supper prior to tutoring and transportation departing at 5:00 pm. Students received letters and personal phone calls were made identifying what courses they have been selected to participate in based on their course schedule. It's important for our students to attend, so parents and guardians - we need your help!

Report Cards
Students and parents, report cards will be distributed on Monday, April 1st during 7th period. Keep up with student grades in between report cards and progress reports by visiting ProgressBook or accessing the parental views on Canvas.

Thank you for your support and have a great weekend!

In Trojan Pride,

Mr. Rolando Bailey
Principal

The Elevate Vision Breakfast took place on March 5th. Selected Elevate students were able to speak with donors, members within the organization, and other schools to tell their stories and express how Elevate has helped them in their lives. Our students were exemplars of pride, determination, and perseverance as they demonstrated their skills in building relationships.

Evans High School is recognized with the AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award for Computer Science AP and Computer Science Principles

Congratulations to Dr. Jamilla Mitchell! Evans High School has earned the College Board's AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award for attaining female student representation in AP Computer Science courses for 2018. Among the more than 18,000 secondary schools worldwide that offer AP courses, Evans is one of only 685 that have achieved this important result - list of all winning schools (Evans on page 19).

This honor acknowledges the amazing work Evans High School is doing to close the gender equity gap in computer science. An official award certificate to celebrate this achievement will arrive at the school soon.

The College Board recognizes the importance of diversity in computer science. By your leadership in this area, you prepare your female students for the high-paying, in-demand jobs of the future and give them the opportunity to help solve some of society's most challenging problems.

Again, congratulations. Thank you for your commitment to expanding access to computer science education.
