Your Community Brief from Evans High School
Monday, January 28, 2019
|
Thank you for your commitment to making Evans High School, "A Place of High Achievement." Our focus is on Literacy, Rigor, and Relationships and our school's pillars of Pride, Determination, and Perseverance continue to be on display by our students, staff and community.
Academic Achievement
Over the next two weeks, we will be celebrating students who met the criteria for honor roll and principal's honor roll for the first semester and also meet with the students who finished the first semester below a 2.0 unweighted GPA. These are two vastly different events yet require the reinforcement of the same message -
that school matters, your job as a student has consequences, both positive and negative, and that achievement is rooted in hard work, self-discipline, and priorities.
Every student matters and every class matters. Students sometimes question our tardy sweeps and our high expectations. It's only because we want our students to perform at their highest level with total effort. The supports are in place, and we welcome any student to advocate for themselves as they try to either climb out of a hole or reach for greater heights!
Parent Survey
Trojans, it's that time of year again to participate in the Evans HS Parent AdvancEd Survey and we need help from our Evans parents & guardians.
AdvancEd is an accrediting agency created to administer the surveys as part of the school accreditation process. Results will help Evans and OCPS with our current environment as they give us feedback on how to improve. The survey consists of demographic questions, followed by a number of questions that require a rating, concluding with an opportunity to respond to open ended questions. The survey is available in Arabic, English, Haitian Creole, Mandarin, Portuguese, and Spanish.
We value your opinion and ask that you take few minutes complete this survey. All responses to this survey are anonymous.
Our goal is to ensure that at least 20% of Evans parents complete this survey. The survey link will be available through Friday, March 15, 2019.
Make it a great week Trojans!

Friday begins Black History Month across the United States. Thirty-three years ago this morning (Jan. 28, 1986),
Dr. Ronald Erwin McNair (below) was lost with six of his colleagues when the space shuttle Challenger exploded 73 seconds into the flight of mission STS 51-L. He was serving aboard as one of the three astronaut mission specialists. He left behind his wife Cheryl and two children. He has an amazing biography that would inspire any of our Trojans.
On this Monday, Evans High School remembers Dr. McNair, astronaut/physicist, and the other members of the Challenger crew (OV-099).
Dr. McNair earned multiple college degrees and had many interests of which one was instructing the sport of karate where he held a 5th degree black belt.
The crew of Space Shuttle mission STS 51-L pose for their official portrait on November 15, 1985. In the back row from left to right: Ellison S. Onizuka, Sharon Christa McAuliffe, Greg Jarvis, and Judy Resnik. In the front row from left to right: Michael J. Smith, Dick Scobee, and Ron McNair.

Rigor in the Classroom
World History: Delving deeper into the Industrial Revolution period
This past week, World history teachers participated in teacher rotations to complete their unit on the Industrial Revolution. Throughout the unit, teachers assessed the lowest scoring areas and then retaught that content by diving deeper into the Florida Dept. of Education state standard. Using the teachers' various strengths and specializations, they readdressed the material while conducting engaging activities with one another's students as seen below.

Baptiste Orthodontics, Partner in Education, recognizes two Trojans for their winning behaviors.
Partner in Education, Baptiste Orthodontics, giving the Trojan Smile Award and a bag full of goodies (gift cards) to two deserving students. These students were nominated by their teachers and this is what their teachers said about them: Samantha Baptiste (blue shirt) Samantha always has a willing attitude in a difficult class for her (geometry). She participates in class, asks questions, and is willing to try (even if she gets something wrong). She maintains a positive attitude (and smile) with a class that doesn't come easily to her.
Kaley Laboy-Melendez Kaley is a very respectful young lady who gets along with her teachers and her peers. She is helpful and has a great attitude. Kaley always has a smile on her face and is pleasant and polite.
