Your Community Brief from Evans High School

Thursday, October 25, 2018

Thank you for your commitment to making Evans High School, "A Place of High Achievement." Our focus is on Literacy, Rigor, and Relationships and our school's pillars of Pride, Determination, and Perseverance continue to be on display by our students, staff and community.

Thank you SGA

I would like to thank SGA and our Sponsors ( Ms. Steadman and Mr. Berardi) for their work last week on our Homecoming activities. Often times the work of our student leaders and SGA sponsors go unnoticed! Planning events require a great deal of collaboration and time, their level of inclusiveness with this year theme of "All around the World" displayed the diversity in cultures that walk the halls of Evans daily. It was easy for everyone to get involved with activities and daily themes. I was extremely happy with the turnout of Thursday's homecoming parade that included clubs, performing arts, sports teams and feeder middle and elementary dance/step teams. Thank you Mrs. Nzinga Green (parent/community coordinator) as your leadership and guidance made this event a huge success and will continue annually.

Fall sports
As the fall sports season comes to a close, we are transitioning into the winter sports season.  Celebrations will occur recognizing our seniors who have participated on varsity sports teams, band and athletic training. I say thank you for your commitment to your teams, your craft, and to your coaches and teammates.

Report cards
We will be releasing first quarter report cards on Monday, October 29th.

With Trojan Pride,

Principal Rolando Bailey

AP World History with Ms. Mathews

AP World History students researched the  Classical Empires as a group and presented the information in the form of "autopsies."  The information included the social, political, and economic structure of the Empire and its subsequent demise.  Each group hung their autopsies in the 500 building hallway and each class walked the autopsy gallery taking notes.  The  students overall consensus on the project - "It was much more interesting than just sitting and  listening to a lecture."

In the form of a human autopsy, these art pieces tell the story of the rise and fall of the world's Classical Empires. While difficult to read here, the pictures provided insightful details of key periods in each empire's history. The students did a superior job in their research.

Homecoming week brought us all "around the world" with games, dress up days, and a revival of a traditional Homecoming parade that featured all our clubs and organizations, as well as our feeder middle and elementary schools.

Evans participates in FFA competition

On October 9th, our Agriculture/FFA students participated in the District 7 Forestry Career Development Event (CDE) held at Moss Park.

The students had the opportunity to apply and evaluate the skills they have learned in the areas of forestry general industry knowledge, timber cruising/lumber estimation, tree identification (dendrology), using a hand compass, tree pest/disorder identification and forestry equipment identification.  The life skills and forestry knowledge the students have gained will be very beneficial to them in the future no matter what path they choose.

Evans received an honorable mention and big "shout out" for the participation in their very first year as an Agriculture/FFA program! Below are all participants from the competition.

Maurice Allen

An Evans High School graduate, this world long drive champion has been a guest speaker for our City Year student group last year and continued his service to his alma mater by donating $20,000 to our scholarship fund this year. He is currently working with OCPS to begin partnerships to expand the scholarship opportunities for students. Now that is pride, determination, and perseverance!

Swimming
The Swim Team was able to take part in a phenomenal collaborative community outreach event this month. Several of our swimmers teamed up with swimmers from Jones High School and both teams assisted and taught youth in the community at the Frontline Outreach center pool.   District Tournaments are fast approaching for all of our Fall Sports.

Bowling
The Bowling team will participate in the district tournament on October 30 at Wekiva Lanes. Our Ladies team continues to prove that they are a force to be reckoned with. They are currently 10-2 having bested some traditional powerhouse teams, including the former state champions from Apopka. The Lady Trojan Bowlers, led by senior Patricia Rosales have high hopes for finishing among the top teams in our area.

Trojans Serving the Community trojansserving
Our Trojans supported World Food Day last week . . .

The focus of the day is that food is a basic and fundamental right.  Yet, in a world of billions, 805 million people worldwide live with chronic hunger, 60% women and almost 5 million children under the age of five die of malnutrition-related causes every day.

World Food Day is celebrated each year on 16 October.  Events are organized in over 150 countries across the world, making it one of the most celebrated days on the UN calendar.  These events promote worldwide awareness and action for those who suffer from hunger and for the need to ensure food security and nutritious diets for all.  Click here: #ZEROHUNGER #STOPFOODWASTE  to find out more!

This Week's Motivational Moment! motivationalmoment

THE FORMULA OF SUCCESS

The United States operates using the free enterprise system. One fact about success applies in school just as it does in the business world. The formula or principle is misunderstood enough, or overlooked enough, that it can truly be called magic those who understand it. Ready? Here it is.

You can surpass 50 percent of the people in America by working hard. You can pass another 40 percent by being a person of honesty and integrity and standing for something. The last 10 percent boils down to your perseverance and determination. As for luck? That usually comes to those who set goals and are prepared for opportunity when it arrives.

And please remember . . .

A success is one who decided to succeed -
and worked.

A failure is one who decided to succeed -
and wished.

A decided failure is one who failed to decide -
and waited.

Have a nice weekend Trojans!
