Teacher of the Year 2019 (pictured at very top)
Ms. Ashley Steadman, Biology
Congratulations to Ms. Steadman as our 2019 Teacher of the Year! Her peers expressed, "She fosters excellence in education, is supportive of her colleagues, is a teamplayer, student advocate, has genuine care for students, is always willing to take on other tasks and duties for the students and to support Administration, great PLC collaborator, thinks of the team before herself, engaging standards-based lessons." and "She is a tremendous asset to the school. Mathematics with Ms. Mannion and Ms. Davis
Algebra I classes are invested in using close reading to deconstruct word problems and then tackle the standards through the rotational model. Ms. Mannion's and Ms. Davis' classes work through strategies for solving problems in context. The rotational model allows for students to work with the concept in multiple exposures: individually, in collaborative groups, and with the teacher directly in a small group. Our paraprofessionals support the rotational model as well for our English Language Learners as they assist in making meaning with our students.

Trojan Athletics athletics

Evans athletics is off to a great start! The varsity football team won both the pre-season classic against the East Ridge Knights and the season opener vs. the Freedom Patriots by scores of 20-15 and 32-18, respectively.

All of our fall sports are in full swing with the Trojans swim team participating in their first meet last Thursday at the Roper YMCA. The Lady Trojan volleyball team has competed in several contests and they continue to make improvements with each match. The boys and girls cross-country track teams will compete in their first meet, the Astronaut Invitational on Saturday, September 8 at Chain of Lakes Park.

Girls and boys bowling have begun practice in preparation for their first match against Olympia on September 19. And finally, the Trojans girls and boys golf teams will begin practice this week. Coach McMillan and Coach Parkinson are excited to begin working with the athletes that are very eager to step onto the golf course in true Trojan style.

-------------

Pep Jam! The first pep rally took place on Friday, August 24 before school and our Trojans got pumped even at the early hour! Below are a few pictures of the event that gave the team enough spirit for a victory over the Freedom Patriots that evening.

Meet Sandra Nonez-Mera, Clinical Counselor
Featured in the Children's Home Societies Newsletter, our resident mental health counselor describes her "WHY."

Sandra Nonez-Mera, Clinical Counselor
"As a clinical counselor, I must say the most important part of my job is to empower my clients on a daily basis. Observing these young ladies, men and children overcome their childhood trauma through learning and implementing the coping skills they were taught is amazing. The most rewarding part of my job is to see them transform to successful men and women who contribute positively in society and become role models and mentors to children experiencing similar childhood challenges. Their success means a lot to me!"

Wellness Wednesdays Kick-Off
The HUB team want our staff to be healthy too! In addition to the support services that they provide to our students, Ms. Green and the team are hosting Wellness Wednesdays for staff. The first was a Water Bar, where the faculty could indulge in water flavored with healthy options to grab and go.
