Your Community Brief from Evans High School
Tuesday, August 21, 2018

Thank you for your commitment to making Evans High School, "A Place of High Achievement." Our focus is on Literacy, Rigor, and Relationships and our school's pillars of Pride, Determination, and Perseverance continue to be on display by our students, staff and community.

A Successful School Start!
Week one of the 2018-2019 school year is in the history books and it was a great one! This past week, we hosted our grade level meetings to discuss with students the importance of committing to their own success - in the classroom, on the field, on the court, in the pool, on stage, in competition, and socially among their peers. It is extremely important for our Trojans to set goals for grades and test scores, and work hard to attain those goals with a positive and driven approach. Parents, our team of teachers, administrators and support staff are here to ensure all students succeed at Evans!

An important key to our success during the first week of school was to focus on three critical areas: building a rapport with the students, establishing rules and expectations, and motivating students to learn. Last week our teachers were developing positive working relationships with their students using various "ice breaker" activities. Teachers have also been reviewing the OCPS Code of Conduct, and we practiced our first fire drill. These rules and protocols established ground rules to ensure student respect for each other and safety for all.

Class Leveling/Changes
Over the next two weeks, our guidance services department will began making adjustments to some classes where the student /teacher ratio is too high for optimal student outcomes. In the event that your student is impacted, you will be contacted by a member of the guidance service team. We have also begun processing class change request forms. We kindly ask for parent and student patience during this time as our guidance team has to thoroughly review each schedule change ensuring such request do not conflict with graduation requirements and meets our criteria.

School Website
In the coming days and weeks, our digital support staff will begin updating our school website. In addition, we will include an updated teacher e-mail list, guidance counselor and administrative dean alpha responsibilities administrative. Please check it regularly for important information from guidance to sports to other school events. Our website address is www.evanshs.ocps.net or contact Mr. Eric Saxon for questions or suggestions at Eric. Saxon@ocps.net

Administrative Team
Finally, I would like to introduce our 2018-2019 administrative team. We are here to support both the students and the Trojan staff!

Teachers were welcomed back in true Trojan spirit as our drumline, cheerleaders, SGA and senior class officers participated in our annual walk in procession. Teachers engaged in professional development as well as time to foster relationships in their departments, not to mention setting up rigorous learning environments for their students.

Student Panel Discussion
To close out teacher pre-planning week, a student panel was asked to share with the teachers and have the opportunity to express to teachers best ways to connect with them, the importance of relationships and creating a safe environment at school.  It was an awesome and touching experience for both students and teachers. Students selected were from various backgrounds, academic standings, and represented with true Trojan Pride!

This Week's Motivational Moment! mm

NEVER GIVE UP

The legendary singer Aretha Franklin died this past week at age 76. Franklin was someone who never gave up. She actually taught herself the piano at age 10 so she could imitate the notes more accurately. She learned tunes by copying musical house guests her family had over and adding her own flourishes. However, what many don't know is that by the time she was 25 she was considered almost a washout.

Franklin vowed to prove everyone wrong. She carefully chose songs that suited her voice. When she couldn't find them, she wrote them herself.

Franklin dominated the music world like few women before or since, racking up one classic hit after another and earning the title "The Queen of Soul." Regarded as one of the top vocalists ever, she's had 17 top 10 pop hits, 12 gold records and five multiplatinum records. She's also won 18 Grammy Awards, more than any other female artist.

The lesson for our Trojans? Be yourself. Set goals for this school year. And most importantly, never ever give up.
