Your Community Brief from Evans High School
Monday, August 6, 2018

Welcome to Evans High School, "A Place of High Achievement" where our focus is on literacy, rigor and relationships. Our school's pillars of pride, determination and perseverance continue to be on display daily by our students, staff and community. School starts Monday, August 13, 2018. The first bell will ring at 7:15am!

Welcome Back Trojans and New Trojans!
On behalf of the administration, faculty, and staff; welcome to the start of another promising school year!  I hope each of you had a restful and rewarding summer.  We are happy to have you back in school!

Freshman Orientation - Thursday, August 9th
On Thursday, August 9th from 6:00pm until 7:30pm, freshmen will have the opportunity to collect their schedules and walk through their classrooms. Please join us on campus for this unique opportunity. Schedules can be retrieved from our remodeled cafeteria. Our 9th grade teachers will be present in their classroom to give a brief overview of the course.

First Day Procedures - Monday, August 13th
The following are some important tips to help ensure a successful first day and first week of school.
  • Students will report to their first period class.
  • Students can find their most current schedule on the parent portal - ProgressBook. If you are unable to access the parent portal, there will be faculty around campus to assist students.
  • Also, large student 1st period location posters will be posted on the windows/walls throughout campus to assist students.
Traffic
Traffic on the first days of school is always extremely busy, heavy, and congested. We strongly encourage students with bus transportation to ride the bus starting the first day of school. However, if your student is registered for bus transportation and you do not know your student's bus number, routing number, pick-up/drop-off locations, and times, you may retrieve this information at this OCPS Find a Bus webpage. If your student is a car rider, we strongly encourage that you allow for at least an extra 20 minutes to get into the student drop-off. We ask that you be patient as many parents will be driving their students to school. The same will apply for afternoon pick-up!

Dress code
Student dress code begins the FIRST DAY of school. A few reminders that will help students ensure they have a good first day without stress of dress code:
  • Sleeveless/strapless/spaghetti tops are NOT allowed.
  • Skirts and shorts must be mid-thigh or longer.
  • Jeans MUST be worn at hips.
  • NO hats or hoodies.
  • NO ripped or torn jeans/shorts
  • NO lounge pants (pajama bottoms).
Annual Green & White Football Game - Friday, August 10th

With Trojan Pride,

New Teacher Spotlight!newteacherspotlight
Meet Mr. Rondel Thorpe, Science Department

Mr. Thorpe will be teaching chemistry this school year.
Q: Where did you attend college?
A: I attended the University of Central Florida with a degree in chemistry with a specialization in biochemistry and minors in physics and in mathematics. Go Knights!!

Q: What are some of your hobbies outside of school?
A: I recently discovered the concept of leisure reading. My current selection revolves around either history, finances, or leadership. I also love to travel. I recently spent a month exploring Peru and working on a research project for a potential anti-tuberculosis drug at the Universidad Nacional de IngenierĂa. I'm a huge science junkie and  I'll talk about anything from the stars, quantum particles, medicine,  and everything in between. (I'm a nerd and proud).

This is an aerial photo of the university in Peru where Mr. Thorpe invested a month of his time assisting with the development of a potential anti-tuberculosis drug.

Q: What makes you most excited to be a Trojan?
A: Evans feels a lot like home. I wanted to find a place that felt right for me. I just couldn't feel that home spirit at other schools. The moment I stepped foot on the campus at Evans it reminded me of my time in high school, and I knew that this is where I wanted to be. I'm hoping to help students gain an appreciation for science and hope to motivate students to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (S.T.E.M.).

Q: What will you be teaching in 2018-2019?
A: I'll be teaching chemistry this year and I am looking forward to meeting the student body of the Trojan Nation!
